Nanopore-rich NiFe LDH targets the formation of the high-valent nickel for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction

Qunlei Wen et al.

Summary: Nanopore-rich NiFe LDH (PR-NiFe LDH) nanosheets were proposed as a catalyst for enhancing the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity and stability. By creating abundant unsaturated Ni sites and decreasing the migration distance of protons, the catalyst promotes the formation of high-valent active sites. The unique structure also improves the stability of OER. The optimized PR-NiFe LDH catalysts exhibit excellent electrocatalytic performance and show good stability in anion exchange membrane (AEM) water electrolyzer devices.

Summary: In this study, doping ruthenium ions into NiFe layered double hydroxide enhanced the catalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The doped ruthenium ions promoted the catalytic activity of Fe sites and enhanced the electronic interaction among the Ni, Fe, and Ru metals. These findings provide a useful approach for improving the intrinsic activity of multi-metallic (oxy) hydroxide electrocatalysts towards the OER.

Rapid surface reconstruction strategies for oxygen evolution reactions: chemical grafting of MXene quantum dots on Ni-Co layered double hydroxides

Lili Song et al.

Summary: The surface reconstruction of Ni-Co LDH@MQD catalysts was achieved through a chemical grafting strategy, which revealed a rapid surface evolution of the electrocatalysts. This surface reconstruction, aided by strong chemical grafting between MQDs and LDHs, allowed the Ni-Co LDH@MQD catalysts to undergo an unconventional bifunctional mechanism, lowering the barriers of the rate-limiting step of the OER.

Introducing oxygen vacancies to NiFe LDH through electrochemical reduction to promote the oxygen evolution reaction

Xiaoman Hou et al.

Summary: This work presents a novel and efficient electrochemical reduction method for introducing oxygen vacancies into NiFe LDH laminates, thereby enhancing their OER performance. The reduced NiFe LDH exhibits increased oxygen vacancy density, electrochemically active surface area, wetting ability, and electron transfer rate, resulting in high current density and long-term stability. This method is applicable for modifying other LDH materials, demonstrating its universality.

Tuning electronic structure of CoNi LDHs via surface Fe doping for achieving effective oxygen evolution reaction

Yunli Shi et al.

Summary: Fe-CoNi LDHs, formed by introducing iron sites onto the surface of CoNi LDHs through cation replacement, exhibit enhanced oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance with a lower overpotential. The presence of iron sites mainly at the surface layer and edges of nanosheets increases the number of reactive sites fully exposed at the LDHs surface, leading to improved catalytic activity. The surface doping of iron modifies the local structure and electronic properties, reducing the binding energy between reactants and catalytic active sites, which enhances the OER performance.

Interfacing or Doping? Role of Ce in Highly Promoted Water Oxidation of NiFe-Layered Double Hydroxide

Mengjie Liu et al.

Summary: Surface engineering of transition metal layered double hydroxides (LDHs) can enhance their catalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The study on Ce-doped NiFe-LDHs and Ce(OH)(3) interfaced NiFe-LDHs reveals that Ce and Fe atoms facilitate the oxidation of Ni3+/4+ in NiFe-LDH, resulting in superior catalytic activity for water oxidation. The enhanced electron transfer between Ce(OH)(3) and the matrix in Ce@NiFe-LDH leads to better catalytic activity compared to CeNiFe-LDH, as demonstrated by first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations.
