Monitoring Insect Resistance to Bt Maize in the European Union: Update, Challenges, and Future Prospects

Matias Garcia et al.

Summary: Transgenic Bt maize producing Cry1Ab toxin has been approved for cultivation in the EU since 1998 and is mainly planted in Spain. In 2021, 100,000 hectares of Bt maize were cultivated in the EU, with Spain accounting for 96%. The monitoring data show that Cry1Ab remains effective against the corn borers, with no decrease in susceptibility and control failures reported.

The carbohydrate-binding module mediates mCherry protein anchoring on the cell wall in rice

Hua Li et al.

Summary: The study investigates the cell wall-directed binding of the carbohydrate-binding module (CBM) using the red fluorescent protein mCherry as a tag. It was found that the CBM can mediate the anchoring of mCherry on the cell wall in rice, indicating that the cell wall could be a potential subcellular structure for accumulating exogenous proteins. Key message: The subcellular localization of the fusion protein SP-CBM11-mCherry in rice demonstrates the anchoring of mCherry on the cell wall.

Iron incorporation both intra- and extra-cellularly improves the yield and saccharification of switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) biomass

Chien-Yuan Lin et al.

Summary: Iron ions as co-catalysts were used to reduce the severity of dilute acid pretreatment in biomass. By expressing iron-accumulating genes in switchgrass, height and yield were increased, with enhanced in planta iron accumulation and glucose release. This iron-accumulating strategy can improve bioenergy crops for biofuel and bioproduct production.

Foreign Cry1Ab/c Delays Flowering in Insect-Resistant Transgenic Rice via Interaction With Hd3a Florigen

Jianmei Fu et al.

Summary: The genetic modifications in rice for insect resistance have effectively increased resistance, but also led to delayed flowering as an undesirable secondary phenotype. The study found that the delay in flowering time was associated with the interaction between exogenous and endogenous proteins in the transgenic rice, shedding light on the molecular mechanisms behind these unwanted effects and potentially improving biosafety assessment processes.

Cellular Localization of Exogenous Cry1Ab/c and its Interaction with Plasma Membrane Ca2+-ATPase in Transgenic Rice

Jianmei Fu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the Cry1Ab/c protein is not only localized in the cytoplasm and nucleus of transgenic rice cells, but also on the plasma membrane where it interacts with plasma membrane Ca2+-ATPase. This interaction may alter the activity of Ca2+-ATPase on the membrane by changing the protein's cellular location, leading to detrimental effects on plant phenotype and growth under salt stress conditions.
