The Eurasian Economic Union - keeping up with the EU and China

Ann-Sophie Gast

Summary: Among the various Eurasian regional organisations, the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) stands out as the first comprehensive economic integration agreement post-Soviet Union collapse. This article examines the reasons why Russia chose to deepen regional integration and give up sovereignty to the regional level, arguing that autocratic states create ROs to mitigate threats to regime survival. Through speeches, official statements, and elite interviews, the analysis demonstrates that the EAEU serves as a means of regime survival for Russia in the face of perceived threats from China and the EU.
