Abatacept as salvage therapy for life-threatening refractory autoimmune hemolytic anemia: a case report

Joerg Hoffmann et al.

Summary: In refractory autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA), the use of abatacept, a fusion protein with a CTLA-4 domain, may be a reasonable approach to overcome therapy resistance. Combined with additional immunosuppressive medication such as azathioprine, abatacept can lead to a long-lasting increase in hemoglobin levels.

Pathogenesis, risk factors and therapeutic options for autoimmune haemolytic anaemia in the post-transplant setting

Maria Gabelli et al.

Summary: Post-HSCT AIHA is a rare and difficult-to-treat complication with high mortality rate, often requiring steroids and rituximab as main therapeutic options with relatively low response rates. Prospective studies are needed to guide clinicians in managing these complex patients.

Phase II Trial of Costimulation Blockade With Abatacept for Prevention of Acute GVHD

Summary: The study showed that adding abatacept to URD HCT was safe and effective in reducing AGVHD and improving SGFS. These results suggest that abatacept may have a significant positive impact on transplant outcomes related to AGVHD, particularly in HLA-mismatched HCT.
