Pet Keeping in the Time of COVID-19: The Canine and Feline Companions of Young Children

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the interactions between children and pet animals in the household were affected, with significant changes to daily living impacting the dynamics between pets and people. Research primarily conducted through online surveys found that the home environment became the center for family activities, school for children, and workplace for adults. This article explores the changes in the definition of pets, examines children's attachments to dogs and cats, and discusses the potential risks and rewards of children cohabitating with cats and dogs during the lockdowns. The article concludes with a discussion on the limitations and contributions of research on pet keeping during COVID-19 and suggests appropriate next steps that prioritize the welfare of young children and their companion animals.
