(Not) Feeling the Past: Boredom as a Racialized Emotion(1)

Summary: This article examines the portrayal of boredom as a racialized emotion in encounters with histories of racial oppression. Drawing on data from two South African high schools, the study reveals how students found the history of apartheid to be boring and disengaging, in contrast to their greater interest in studying the Holocaust. A lack of narrative and emotional connection to apartheid hindered discussions on its ongoing legacies and served as a defense of the status quo. The implications for the study of racialized emotions, collective memory, and history education are discussed.

Alternative View of Modernity: The Subaltern Speaks

Summary: This article discusses how sociologists such as Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, and white American sociologists have overlooked important factors in the development of modernity, including white supremacy, colonization, racial hierarchies, and resistance movements. The author argues that any analysis of modernity that ignores these factors will be incomplete and misleading. The article highlights the work of W.E.B. Du Bois, who centered these determinants in his analysis and presents a case for the development of an emancipatory sociology based on Du Boisian critical sociological thought.

The Historical Racial Regime and Racial Inequality in Poverty in the American South

Summary: Building on existing research on racial regimes and the legacy of slavery, this study introduces a novel measure of the historical racial regime (HRR) and examines its impact on poverty and racial inequality in the American South. The findings suggest that a stronger historical racial regime exacerbates poverty among Black individuals and widens the racial gap in poverty, while its effect on poverty among White Southerners is not significant.

Tipping Point: Perceptions of Diversity in Black and White

Summary: Research suggests that when people of color reach 40-60% of the population, white individuals may experience a threat to their status and resources, leading to more negative attitudes toward diversity. In a study comparing two universities, it was found that in the one with a more diverse population, white students were less satisfied with campus diversity and reported higher levels of discrimination, even more than black students in the less diverse context. This highlights the potential disenfranchisement white Americans may feel with increasing representation of racially and culturally diverse others.
