Celiac Disease and Neurological Manifestations: From Gluten to Neuroinflammation

Mauro Giuffre et al.

Summary: Celiac disease is a complex multi-organ disease that can involve the neurological and psychiatric systems. Recent evidence suggests that the gut microbiota and the gut-liver-brain axis play important roles in the neurological manifestations of celiac disease. There is still debate on the use of serological and neurophysiological findings for the early diagnosis and monitoring of celiac disease-related neurological involvement, but most symptoms can be reversed with a strict gluten-free diet.

Elucidation of Proteus mirabilis as a Key Bacterium in Crohn's Disease Inflammation

Jingwan Zhang et al.

Summary: Proteus spp, particularly Proteus mirabilis, is significantly more prevalent and abundant in fecal samples and colonic tissue of patients with Crohn's disease compared to healthy controls. The presence of P mirabilis is associated with an increase in pro-inflammatory pathways and cytokine production, leading to inflammation in cells and animal models of colitis. These findings suggest that P mirabilis may act as a pathobiont and play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of Crohn's disease.

The gut microbiota-brain axis in behaviour and brain disorders

Livia H. Morais et al.

Summary: This Review discusses the intricate and potentially important connections between the gut microbiota and the brain, involving bidirectional communication along the gut-brain axis. Emerging evidence suggests that disruptions in microbial communities may be implicated in neurological disorders, with animal models providing valuable insights into the pathways linking the gut and the brain which could have tangible impacts on human health.

Fecal and Duodenal Microbiota in Pediatric Celiac Disease

Diyora Abdukhakimova et al.

Summary: This study aimed to summarize the main characteristics of the gut microbiota in pediatric CD. The authors conducted a systematic review and found no specific celiac signature in the fecal and/or duodenal microbiota of CD children. However, certain components of the fecal microbiota, such as Bifidobacterium spp., may warrant further research for their potential value in probiotic therapy and diagnostic/prognostic biomarkers.

Cryo-electron Microscopy Imaging of Alzheimer's Amyloid-beta 42 Oligomer Displayed on a Functionally and Structurally Relevant Scaffold

Jinming Wu et al.

Summary: Amyloid-beta peptide (Aβ) oligomers are pathogenic aggregates in Alzheimer's disease, which can permeabilize cellular membranes through a pore formation mechanism. The Aβ42-αHL oligomers share major structural, functional, and biological properties with wild-type Aβ42-pores, with the pore region being intrinsically flexible according to single-particle cryo-EM analysis. Aβ42-αHL oligomers could be a highly specific antigen for immuno-based diagnostics and therapies, allowing for the study of features of wild-type amyloid oligomers.
