Encapsulation of natural drug gentiopicroside into zinc based Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks (ZIF-8): In-vitro drug release and improved antibacterial activity

Safdar Ali Amur et al.

Summary: In this study, the multifunctional natural drug gentiopicroside (GPS) was successfully encapsulated into zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-8) in an aqueous solution at room temperature. The ZIF-8 MOFs served as a suitable carrier for delivering GPS, with a high loading efficacy of 84%. Characterization techniques confirmed the uniform hexagonal morphology of GPS@ZIF-8, similar to pure ZIF-8, and an increased particle size of GPS@ZIF-8 indicated efficient encapsulation of GPS. The release profile showed faster release of GPS from GPS@ZIF-8 in acidic medium compared to physiological medium. This study suggests that ZIF-8 can be a potential carrier for controlled delivery of GPS in the future.
