Summary: This review discusses the reaction mechanism of the electrochemical reduction of NO3- and systematically summarizes recent developments in electrocatalysts for the NO3-RR. Various design strategies to enhance the performance of NO3-RR, such as defect engineering, rational structure design, strain engineering, and constructing heterostructures, are discussed. The authors also illustrate how understanding these optimization strategies can provide fundamental insights into the yield rate, faradaic efficiency, and selectivity of electrocatalysts for NH3 synthesis.

Electro-triggered Joule heating method to synthesize single-phase CuNi nano-alloy catalyst for efficient electrocatalytic nitrate reduction toward ammonia

Zunjie Zhang et al.

Summary: By using the electrotriggered Joule heating method, a uniformly dispersed single-phase CuNi nano-alloy catalyst was synthesized, which showed high electrocatalytic activity for the nitrate reduction reaction and efficient ammonia production. Theoretical calculations revealed that alloying Cu with Ni enhanced the adsorption of NO3- and weakened the adsorption of NH3, while also suppressing the competitive adsorption of hydrogen ions.

Electrochemically time-dependent oxidative coupling/coupling-cyclization reaction between heterocycles: tunable synthesis of polycyclic indole derivatives with fluorescence properties

Zuozhou Ning et al.

Summary: A mild and practical protocol for selectively time-dependent dehydrogenative C-C coupling, as well as tandem coupling-cyclization reaction between indoles or/and other heteroaromatics via electrochemically oxidative process has been demonstrated. The reaction runs under noble catalyst, external oxidant and inert gas free condition, allowing tunable access to a wide variety of synthetically useful symmetrical or nonsymmetrical heteroarene with aggregation-induced emission (AIE), and polycyclic 3-D indole derivatives with aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) fluorescence properties. Finally, preliminary mechanistic study indicated that tunable generation of indole cation under various electrolysis potential via regulating N-protecting group was the key to achieve cross-coupling between indoles and other heteroaromatics.
