The neurobiology of duration of untreated psychosis: a comprehensive review

Anthony W. Zoghbi et al.

Summary: This comprehensive review examined the neurobiology of DUP and found that about 32.5% of studies reported a significant neurobiological correlate with DUP. These results challenge the notion of global neurotoxicity in psychosis and suggest that specific brain regions may be more vulnerable to the effects of DUP.

Functional connectivity and gray matter deficits within the auditory attention circuit in first-episode psychosis

Mark T. Curtis et al.

Summary: This study found that first episode of psychosis (FEP) patients have deficits in selective attention, and the underlying pathophysiology may involve a distributed attention network beyond the auditory cortex. The study also identified attention-related activity in prefrontal and parietal regions, notably in the precuneus. Compared to the healthy controls, FEP patients showed impaired network synchrony and reduced gray matter thickness in the left hemisphere network. These novel findings suggest the presence of attention-related circuitopathy in early psychosis, which may be amenable to non-invasive interventions in the future.

Altered functional synchrony between gray and white matter as a novel indicator of brain system dysconnectivity in schizophrenia

Naici Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that schizophrenia patients showed reductions in white matter functional activity, particularly in the genu of the corpus callosum. Additionally, there were correlations between white matter and gray matter functional activity, as well as white matter microstructure changes. These findings provide valuable evidence for functional alterations in schizophrenia.

Load-dependent functional connectivity deficits during visual working memory in first-episode psychosis

Alfredo L. Sklar et al.

Summary: This study found that there are connectivity deficits in the working memory network in first-episode schizophrenia patients. The ability to enhance communication between perceptual and executive networks in response to increasing cognitive demands is impaired in these patients, and the degree of impairment is associated with positive symptoms.

Anatomy of phonemic and semantic fluency: A lesion and disconnectome study in 1231 stroke patients

J. Matthijs Biesbroek et al.

Summary: The study identified anatomical correlates for semantic and phonemic fluency, with lower performance associated with left hemispheric frontotemporal and parietal cortical regions, and subcortical regions centered on the left thalamus. Phonemic fluency was linked to a more extensive frontoparietal white matter network, while semantic fluency was associated with disconnection of specific white matter tracts.

Abnormal Cortical Activation Patterns Among Chinese-Speaking Schizophrenia Patients During Category and Letter Verbal Fluency Tasks Revealed by Multi-Channel Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy

Juan Li et al.

Summary: Schizophrenia patients showed reduced left lateralization during CFT, potentially related to semantic deficits. The Chinese-CFT may be a more sensitive indicator of frontal-temporal dysfunction in schizophrenia.
