Impact of Heat Pumps, Rooftop PV, and Hydrogen Blending on Gas-Electricity Distribution Networks in Northeast US

Jonte Dancker et al.

Summary: The building sector contributes about 7% of greenhouse gas emissions in the US. By electrifying heating and cooling supply with heat pumps (HPs), it could lead to increased electricity demand and potential overload in distribution systems. This study investigates the impact of HPs and rooftop PV systems in a representative distribution system in Northeast US, and the potential of coupling electricity and gas distribution systems. Results show that combining HPs and PV systems can reduce the impact on the distribution system, while hydrogen injection on distribution level is technically limited and not economically viable.

Dynamic electricity tariffs: Designing reasonable pricing schemes for private households

Julia Freier et al.

Summary: Dynamic electricity tariffs have several advantages, including balancing supply and demand, supporting renewable energy integration, reducing CO2 emissions, and increasing overall economic efficiency. This study focuses on designing dynamic tariffs that can overcome adoption barriers by creating cost savings. Taking into account households' heterogeneity, the study compares different price signals and finds that EEX spot market prices are inferior to forecasted renewable energy production and residual load in terms of cost savings and emission reductions. The study also highlights the importance of analyzing the average short-term price spread in tariff design.

Analysis of New Flexibility Market Models in Europe

Orlando Valarezo et al.

Summary: A review of market and aggregator platforms reveals the impact of new flexibility markets on European electricity market design, indicating the importance of promoting flexibility utilization from distributed resources. The results also suggest promising business opportunities in providing services to DSOs and coordinating with TSOs, with potential policy implications for customer empowerment through active participation in markets.
