Unintended consequences of combating desertification in China

Xunming Wang et al.

Summary: Since the early 2000s, China has implemented grain-for-green and grazing exclusion practices in the desertification-prone region, but the impacts of these practices on the environment and socioeconomic factors are still unclear. This study quantifies and compares changes in vegetation cover with economic and population data before and after the implementation of environmental programs. The results reveal that climate change and CO2 fertilization play a significant role in vegetation rehabilitation, but the decline in farmers' and herders' incomes exceeds the government subsidies. To minimize economic hardships and enhance policy investments, China needs to adapt its environmental programs to address the potential impacts of climate change and create positive synergies.

Potential of land-based climate change mitigation strategies on abandoned cropland

Maren H. Gvein et al.

Summary: According to bottom-up estimates based on biomass yields and life-cycle emissions, natural revegetation of abandoned cropland in biodiversity priority areas and afforestation and growth of bioenergy crop in other areas could achieve a climate change mitigation potential of 0.8-4.0 GtCO2-eq. per year. Afforestation generally provides larger climate benefits than bioenergy, but bioenergy with carbon capture and storage delivers the highest mitigation in most locations. Overall, these results offer refined estimates of mitigation potentials from abandoned cropland and highlight opportunities for context-specific mitigation measures.

Abandoned farmland: Past failures or future opportunities for Europe's Green Deal? A Baltic case-study

Kristine Valujeva et al.

Summary: The management and reintegration of abandoned agricultural land in Europe can lead to triple win synergies in terms of increasing primary productivity, carbon regulation, and biodiversity habitat. However, in regions where abandoned agricultural land is limited due to favorable conditions for intensive agricultural production, such synergies are scarce. Abandoned land plays a crucial role in maintaining ecosystem services and biodiversity, and even small increases in primary productivity come at the expense of biodiversity. Therefore, careful management involving diverse actors is necessary in decision-making and priority setting in each region.

A large but transient carbon sink from urbanization and rural depopulation in China

Xiaoxin Zhang et al.

Summary: This study tests the hypothesis that urbanization and carbon neutrality are not mutually exclusive, and that sustainably managed urbanization could increase carbon sequestration. The results show that urban greening compensates for initial carbon losses caused by urban expansion, and rural areas experiencing depopulation coincide with extensive aboveground carbon sinks. However, the capacity for carbon removal by forests is limited, and reducing CO2 emissions from fossil fuel burning is necessary to achieve carbon neutrality.

Carbon and nitrogen stocks through time in abandoned croplands of the Comarca Lagunera, Mexico

Annel J. Contreras-Cisneros et al.

Summary: Crop abandonment due to water scarcity in the Comarca Lagunera region of Mexico leads to vegetation succession, which has effects on soil organic carbon and total nitrogen levels. This study found that 35 years after abandonment, there was a high dominance of Prosopis glandulosa species, resulting in three times more carbon and nitrogen in the aboveground biomass compared to reference areas. However, soil carbon tended to decrease with increasing years of abandonment, suggesting that achieving soil carbon accumulation through unmanaged ecological succession is difficult in this area.

Rural land abandonment is too ephemeral to provide major benefits for biodiversity and climate

Christopher L. Crawford et al.

Summary: Since 1950, a large amount of cropland has been abandoned globally due to various factors. The abandonment of cropland could have been a great opportunity for carbon sequestration and habitat restoration; however, the reality shows that the abandonment is usually short-lived, lasting only an average of 14.22 years. Most abandoned croplands will be recultivated within 30 years, which prevents the accumulation of substantial amounts of carbon and biodiversity. Without measures to reduce recultivation or provide incentives for regeneration, the opportunity to reduce biodiversity loss and climate change will be missed.

A systematic review and gap analysis of drivers, impacts, and restoration options for abandoned croplands in Nepal

Roshan Babu Ojha et al.

Summary: This study presents a systematic review of the causes and impacts of cropland abandonment in Nepal, as well as restoration options. The drivers of cropland abandonment include socio-economic factors such as outmigration and limited availability of labor, as well as biophysical factors like unsuitable slope and low soil fertility. Positive and negative impacts of abandonment were observed, with secondary vegetation succession being a positive impact and geomorphic damage and low crop production being negative impacts. Restoration options for abandoned land include adopting short crop cycles, less labor-intensive crops, agro-forestry, and conversion to pasture. However, most studies lack a coordinated approach at a national level.
