Stakeholder legitimacy in firm greening and financial performance: What about greenwashing temptations?

Michael T. Lee et al.

Summary: Stakeholder activism puts pressure on firms to engage in greening conduct to enhance ESG and financial performance. Legitimacy of firms' ESG conduct and performance as it relates to financial performance is important to stakeholders. There is a link between stakeholder legitimacy, ESG performance, and financial performance. However, greenwashing does not affect financial performance.

Product Market Competition and Corporate Relocations: Evidence from the Supply Chain

Chen Chen et al.

Summary: Intensified competition changes the location of business activity and affects supply chain relationships. Suppliers are more likely to relocate closer to customers in response to increased competition. This relocation leads to increased sales, improved relationships, and alignment of innovation between suppliers and customers. However, it also has adverse effects on creative innovation.

Firms? access to informal financing: The role of shared managers in trade credit access

Feng Ding et al.

Summary: We investigate the impact of shared managers and directors with major suppliers on a firm's access to trade credit. Using a sample of listed firms in China, we find that shared M&Ds play a crucial role in helping firms obtain trade credit, particularly for firms with higher information asymmetry, lower social trust, operating in innovative and heterogeneous industries, and facing greater financial constraints. Our findings support the notion that shared M&Ds can reduce information asymmetry and build mutual trust between firms and their suppliers. This study contributes to the literature on the benefits of social connections within supply chain relationships and the economic consequences of interlocked managers and directors.

Retail investor trading and ESG pricing in China

Xufeng Liu et al.

Summary: Using ESG ratings data for Chinese stocks from 2009 to 2020, this study finds that investing in high-ESG stocks and selling low-ESG stocks generates positive and significant returns, even after considering other factors like Fama-French factors. The study also reveals that the pricing anomalies based on retail trading activities can explain these returns and that the influence of ESG on stock returns decreases as retail trading intensity increases. These findings support the existing ESG pricing theory.

Stay or switch? The impact of venture capitalists' movement across network communities on enterprises' innovation performance

Jing Gu et al.

Summary: Venture capital plays a vital role in promoting economic prosperity and innovation. To overcome the high risks and resource requirements, venture capitalists form network communities to share resources and mitigate risks. This study explores the movement behavior of investors across VC network communities and its impact on VC performance, measured by enterprises' innovation. The findings reveal an inverted U-shaped effect, indicating that moving between network communities has both positive and negative effects on innovation, influenced by VC experience and network community clustering level.

Pareto optimality and contract dependence in supply chain coordination with risk-averse agents

Juzhi Zhang et al.

Summary: In this paper, the authors provide a comprehensive analysis of supply chain coordination (SCC) with risk-averse agents. They find that achieving Pareto optimality (PO) depends on the contract type and present challenges when using it as the criterion for SCC. The authors also explore multiretailer, multimanufacturer, and multitier supply chains and design coordinating contracts to achieve PO. However, identifying PO becomes difficult when considering other risk-aversion criteria. The paper concludes by offering suggestions and methods for SCC when PO cannot be identified.

The Deep Participation of Zhejiang Private Science and Technology Enterprises in the Integrated Development of the Yangtze River Delta

Xiaomin Yin et al.

Summary: Private science and technology enterprises are the main force in building a high-level innovative province in Zhejiang and driving the province's integration into the Yangtze River Delta. However, there are challenges in the integration process, including low integration ratio, high integration difficulty, low integration level, and insufficient integration confidence. These challenges are primarily due to concept bottlenecks, institutional dilemmas, and the underdeveloped role of non-governmental organizations. To address these issues, it is necessary to strengthen the role of enterprises, government guidance, and non-governmental organizations in coordinating and supervising the integration process.

Examining the impact of upstream and downstream relationship stability and concentration on firms' financial performance

Jing Gu et al.

Summary: Maintaining stable relationships with major suppliers and customers positively affects a firm's financial performance, while high concentration of major suppliers and customers can have negative effects. Geographical distance can amplify the positive impact of stability and exacerbate the negative impact of concentration.

Does China's carbon emissions trading scheme affect the market power of high-carbon enterprises?

Wei Wang et al.

Summary: This study uses the difference-in-differences method and mediating effect model to examine the impact of China's ETS on the market power of high-carbon enterprises. The results indicate that the implementation of China's ETS has led to a decline in the market power of these enterprises, mainly through reducing the level of horizontal integration. The policy has a significant negative impact on enterprises in the petrochemical and chemical industries, as well as state-owned enterprises with high financing constraints and large-scale operations.

Summary: This study examines the impact of demand-side and supply-side market power on firm profitability and access to bank financing. The findings indicate that both types of market power are associated with higher profitability and easier access to bank financing, with product-market power being slightly more beneficial. The results suggest that firm power from both demand-side and supply-side operations can improve performance and alleviate external financing constraints.
