Collective Rhythm as an Emergent Property During Human Social Coordination

Arodi Farrera et al.

Summary: This article reviews the literature on social interactions, discussing the existence of rhythmic patterns and coordination at the group level. The authors argue that the complexity of group dynamics can lead to emergent collective rhythms that cannot be predicted from individual periodicities. They also suggest that considering the sociocultural context in which individuals develop can help explain the seemingly divergent results on the social influences and consequences of interpersonal coordination.

Individual goals interact with dyad goals to constrain and facilitate the formation of interpersonal patterns of coordination

John J. Buchanan et al.

Summary: Two experiments were conducted to investigate the spontaneous and intentional formation of interpersonal coordination patterns within dyads. Results showed that pre-set amplitude goals influenced interpersonal coordination, although dyads were able to achieve the required coordination patterns when intentionally forming them.

The role of intentionality in the performance of a learned 90° bimanual rhythmic coordination during frequency scaling: data and model

Rachel A. Herth et al.

Summary: Studying bimanual coordination reveals that mastering 90 degrees coordination can improve stability at different frequencies. Unlike switching from 180 degrees to 0 degrees, transitioning from learned 90 degrees coordination to intrinsic 0 degrees or 180 degrees modes would require intentional decisions and entail a change in information during performance.
