Hydrocarbon accumulation controlled by early stage rifting and late stage orthogonal subduction, the Madura Sub-Basin, Indonesia as example

Xiwu Luan et al.

Summary: Petroleum is mostly located in the sandstone reservoris of the Middle to Late Miocene Ngrayong and Wonocolo Formations in the Madura Sub-Basin, Indonesia. Oligo-Miocene reef carbonates have recently gained attention, as they have the best petro-physical properties but are poorly understood. Through the analysis of seismic data, drilling results, core data, and logging data, it is found that there are two coexisting tectonic systems in the study area, with the NE-trending rifting system controlling the development of the Kujung reef carbonate and the EW-trending subduction system providing additional heat for the source rock and tilting the Kujung reef carbonate. The tilting of the carbonate reservoirs causes gas leakage, resulting in gas reservoirs only being found in the upper level reservoirs and south of the Rembang-Madura-Kangean (RMK) line.

Morphology of the submerged Ferdinandea Island, the 'Neverland' of the Sicily Channel (central Mediterranean Sea)

Daniele Spatola et al.

Summary: We present a bathy-morphological map of the area around the submerged Ferdinandea Island in the Sicily Channel. The map provides insights into the interplay between volcanic, tectonic, fluid seepage, and oceanographic processes in the region. This map is important for habitat mapping and preliminary marine geohazard assessment in a biodiversity hotspot influenced by maritime traffic and hosting communication pipelines.

Geometric and kinematic analysis of faults bordering the Andaman sea continental shelves: a 3D seismic case study

Meng Guo et al.

Summary: By studying the fault geometry and dynamics of the M15 block in the Andaman Sea using 3D seismic data, we have identified the presence of eight sequence interfaces, large scale extensional strike-slip faults, and normal faults. The F1 and F2 faults, which control the regional structure, are influenced by the collision between the Indian plate and the Eurasian plate. The analysis of fault development history suggests that the Miocene is a significant period for plate collision enhancement and fault generation.

The Baltic Sea methane pockmark microbiome: The new insights into the patterns of relative abundance and ANME niche separation

Timur R. Iasakov et al.

Summary: This study conducted massive sequencing of samples from thirteen pockmark horizons in the Baltic Sea, identifying a diverse community of 76 bacterial and 12 archaeal phyla. The study revealed different patterns of relative abundance in various phyla at different horizons, and highlighted the correlation between the abundance of certain bacterial phyla and AOM rates.

Multiple drivers and controls of pockmark formation across the Canterbury Margin, New Zealand

Aaron Micallef et al.

Summary: This study examines the formation of pockmarks, shallow seabed depressions, and identifies multiple factors that contribute to their formation. The results show that pockmarks are formed as a result of a combination of fluid type, overpressures, sediment type, stratigraphy, and bottom currents. The occurrence of pockmarks is associated with muddy sediments at the seafloor and the influence of bottom currents.

Summary: Late Quaternary carbonate dissolution was evaluated by analyzing sediment cores from two different oceanographic settings in the Indian Ocean, showing variations in dissolution intensity and species diversity. Carbonate dissolution can serve as an important proxy for climatic and environmental changes.

The Timing of Collision Between Asia and the West Burma Terrane, and the Development of the Indo-Burman Ranges

Yani Najman et al.

Summary: Understanding the geological history of the West Burma Terrane (WBT) is crucial for reconstructing the closure history of the Tethys Ocean and the India-Asia collision. However, there are significant discrepancies regarding the timing of the collision between the WBT and both India and Asia. Through a multi-technique provenance study and low temperature thermochronological analysis, this research provides important insights into the timing of WBT-Asia collision.

Passive continental margin segmentation of the marginal seas and its effect on hydrocarbon accumulation: A case study of the northern continental margin in South China Sea

Gongcheng Zhang et al.

Summary: Global continental marginal basins are often segmented and impact hydrocarbon accumulation. The northern South China Sea is a marginal sea with passive continental marginal basins, such as the Pearl River Mouth Basin and the Qiongdongnan Basin, both rich in oil and gas resources but exhibiting significant differences in accumulation patterns.

Summary: Research in the deep-water Rakhine Basin offshore Myanmar indicates that the intersections of turbidite channels and anticline structures are the main targets for future gas exploration, as only the combination of these two features can lead to hydrocarbon accumulation.

The interplay of stratal and vertical migration pathways in shallow hydrocarbon plumbing systems

Qiliang Sun et al.

Summary: This paper presents a detailed study of a hydrocarbon plumbing system in the South China Sea, involving both vertical and lateral migration in multilayer stacking sediments. The transtensive fault system plays a crucial role in providing lateral seal and vertical pathways for migration. The migration pathway leads to continuous trail of amplitude anomalies, suggesting active hydrocarbon migration from Late Pleistocene to present day.

Sequence stratigraphy of the Andaman Basin, northern Indian Ocean

D. K. Srivastava et al.

Summary: The Andaman Basin, located in the northeastern Indian Ocean, has preserved sedimentary records from the Late Cretaceous to the present day with several significant stratigraphic breaks. Through the study of outcropping sedimentary successions and subsurface data from drilled wells offshore, researchers have been able to establish a sequence stratigraphic framework of the basin's sedimentary succession. This framework includes three first-order sequences and multiple second-order sequences, each corresponding to different tectonic events and uplift periods in the basin's history.

Thrust Faults Promoted Hydrocarbon Leakage at the Compressional Zone of Fine-Grained Mass-Transport Deposits

Qiliang Sun et al.

Summary: This study reveals thrust faults in the compressional toe zone of fine-grained MTDs, which may disrupt the seal competence and enhance vertical fluid flow. Seismic evidence indicates a significant amount of hydrocarbons migrated through these thrust faults and charged into coarse-grained sandstone blocks, highlighting the importance of reassessing the seal capacity of MTDs.

Deep-water sedimentation controlled by interaction between bottom current and gravity flow: A case study of Rovuma Basin, East Africa

Xiwu Luan et al.

Summary: The study of an Upper Eocene channel-levee-lobe complex in offshore Mozambique using 3D seismic data revealed the unique asymmetric development of levees and the bending of lobes due to factors such as paleotopography effects and interaction between gravity flows and bottom currents. The asymmetric distribution of sediments and the migration patterns of channels were influenced by the sorting and stacking of sediments by the flow dynamics in the Rovuma Basin.

The Andaman Basin Central Fault Zone, Andaman Sea: Characteristics of a major deepwater strike-slip fault system in a polyphase rift

Thananchai Mahattanachai et al.

Summary: The seismic data from Thailand waters in the Andaman Sea revealed a major NNE-SSW trending strike-slip fault known as the Andaman Basin Central Fault Zone. This fault developed during a change in extensional activity from E-W to ENE-WSW in the Oligocene-earliest Miocene period. The distinctive structural style of the regionally dominant R' shears is believed to be a result of NNW-SSE extension related to the northwards movement of the Indian Plate relative to SE Asia.
