Summary: Individuals with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) often experience significant levels of depression, especially among younger participants and those who report greater loneliness or more disease-specific stressors. The severity of depressive symptoms is associated with greater illness intrusiveness, less social support, and lower optimism. Interventions targeting loneliness and unique stressors in this population are valuable.

Summary: This article reviews the prevalence of autism worldwide, considering the impact of geographic, ethnic, and socioeconomic factors on prevalence estimates. Approximately 1/100 children are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder around the world. Prevalence estimates increased over time and varied greatly within and across sociodemographic groups. These findings reflect changes in the definition of autism and differences in the methodology and contexts of prevalence studies.

Impact of mental health on disease activity in mastocytosis during COVID-19 pandemic

Summary: This study investigated the influence of mental health problems developed during the COVID-19 pandemic on the course of mastocytosis. The study found that fear of COVID-19 and mental health status were more severe in patients during the lockdown period (LP) compared to the return to normal period (RTNP), and there was a positive correlation between mental health status and exacerbation of mastocytosis symptoms. Therefore, providing psychological support during the pandemic is important in controlling the severity of mastocytosis symptoms.

Perceptions of patient disease burden and management approaches in systemic mastocytosis: Results of the TouchStone Healthcare Provider Survey

Summary: This study examined the perceptions and management strategies of US health care providers treating systemic mastocytosis (SM). Most patients were found to have nonadvanced disease, but symptoms significantly disrupted their lives. The role of the clinical and psychological symptoms of mastocytosis in the patient?s quality of life

Summary: This study assessed the clinical and psychological symptoms, quality of life, and satisfaction with life in patients with mastocytosis. The results showed that allergy symptoms were associated with lower quality of life in leisure time. Anxiety, depression, and irritability were positively correlated with general quality of life, while satisfaction with current life and life in the next 4 weeks were negatively correlated. The findings highlight the importance of improving patients' quality of life.

Olfactory Function Is Impaired in Patients with Mastocytosis

A significant negative correlation was found between olfactory function and serum tryptase concentration. Olfactory dysfunction may be considered as a clinical manifestation contributing to the burden of mastocytosis.

Risk stratification is important for treatment planning, with options including small-molecule inhibitors targeting mutant-KIT for advanced cases. Treatment goals involve symptom control and prevention of complications such as anaphylaxis in indolent cases, while cytoreductive therapy may be necessary for those with advanced disease.
