Anti-biofilm and bystander effects of antimicrobial photo-sonodynamic therapy against polymicrobial periopathogenic biofilms formed on coated orthodontic mini-screws with zinc oxide nanoparticles

Rashin Bahrami et al.

Summary: The present study evaluated the anti-biofilm and bystander effects of antimicrobial photo-sonodynamic therapy (aPSDT) on polymicrobial periopathogenic biofilms formed on mini-screws coated with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs). The results showed that ZnONPs-mediated aPSDT could significantly reduce periopathogen biofilm as well as the expression level of inflammatory cytokines.

Do silver/hydroxyapatite and zinc oxide nano-coatings improve inflammation around titanium orthodontic mini-screws? In vitro study

Mahmoud M. Fathy Abo-Elmahasen et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the antimicrobial activities of deposited nanomaterials (silver/hydroxyapatite nanoparticles and zinc oxide nanoparticles) in vitro. The results showed that zinc oxide nanoparticles had the highest antimicrobial activity against gram-positive, gram-negative, and fungal strains. Moreover, zinc oxide nanoparticles exhibited better cytocompatibility with oral epithelial cells, bone cells, and fibroblasts compared to silver/hydroxyapatite nanoparticles.

Osteoclast differentiation and formation induced by titanium implantation through complement C3a

Xiaohan Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, inflammatory responses and osteoclast proliferation near the titanium implant were identified, along with increased C3 levels in serum and tissues around the implant. It was found that the C3a fragment played a key role in stimulating pro-inflammatory cytokines and promoting bone resorption through NF-kB and NFATc1 pathways. Blocking C3a activation could potentially prevent bone resorption and enhance the longevity of biomaterial implants.

Effects of Titanium Corrosion Products on In Vivo Biological Response: A Basis for the Understanding of Osseointegration Failures Mechanisms

Claudia Cristina Biguetti et al.

Summary: The study revealed that corrosion of titanium-based biomaterials can lead to exacerbated inflammatory response and have negative impacts on healing and osseointegration. The experimental model used replicated the surface features of Ti corrosion observed in real clinical failures, and researchers conducted detailed investigations on various parameters to better understand this process.

Bone Density around Titanium Dental Implants Coating Tested/Coated with Chitosan or Melatonin: An Evaluation via Microtomography in Jaws of Beagle Dogs

Nansi Lopez-Valverde et al.

Summary: The study evaluated bone density around dental implants coated with chitosan and melatonin compared to conventional etched surface implants using micro-CT in Beagle dogs. Results showed significant effects on bone density from different regions of interest and implant positions, but no statistical significance from surface coatings. Micro-CT proved to be an effective tool for measuring osseointegration.
