Efficacy of dietary vitamin D3 and 25(OH)D3 on reproductive capacities, growth performance, immunity and bone development in pigs

Maruf Hasan et al.

Summary: Vitamin D-3 (Vit D-3) and 25(OH)D-3 are used as dietary sources of active vitamin D in pig husbandry, and while their primary effects are on the intestine, kidney, and bone, they also have wide-ranging effects on peripheral tissues. The use of Vit D-3 and 25(OH)D-3 in pig nutrition has been shown to have different outcomes in terms of reproductive capacities, growth performance, immunity, and bone development.

Vitamin D improves hepatic steatosis in NAFLD via regulation of fatty acid uptake and β-oxidation

Tingwan Du et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the association between serum 25(OH)D-3 and hepatic steatosis in NAFLD patients and investigate whether vitamin D has an effect on activating the PPAR alpha pathway. The study consisted of a case-control study, in vivo experiments with rats, and in vitro experiments with HepG2 cells. The results showed that NAFLD patients had impaired liver function, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance. Adequate vitamin D levels were found to have a protective effect on NAFLD patients. In addition, vitamin D treatment ameliorated hepatic steatosis in both rats and cells. MK886, a PPARa antagonist, inhibited the anti-steatosis effect of vitamin D. These findings suggest that vitamin D may protect against NAFLD and alleviate hepatic steatosis through the PPAR alpha signaling pathway.

Tissue-Wide Expression of Genes Related to Vitamin D Metabolism and FGF23 Signaling following Variable Phosphorus Intake in Pigs

Maruf Hasan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the tissue-wide expression patterns of key genes related to vitamin D metabolism and FGF23 signaling in pigs fed different phosphorus diets. The results showed that non-renal tissues and cells have specific requirements for active vitamin D formation. Low phosphorus diet suppressed vitamin D signaling locally, while high phosphorus diet stimulated local vitamin D synthesis and regulation of FGF23 signaling in bone.

Effects of excessive or restricted phosphorus and calcium intake during early life on markers of bone architecture and composition in pigs

Christian Gerlinger et al.

Summary: The study confirms that the recommended calcium and phosphorous supply is adequate without the need for microbial phytases. However, excessive phosphorous supplementation does not provide added benefits to bone stability, while insufficient levels can impact bone development and growth performance. Fine-tuning phosphorous supply in conjunction with appropriate calcium supply can help reduce phosphorous waste and its environmental impact while maintaining animal health and welfare.

Jejunal transcriptomic profiling of two layer strains throughout the entire production period

Adewunmi Omolade Omotoso et al.

Summary: This study examined the molecular pathways in the jejunum of high-yielding layer strains during different developmental stages and found marked distinctions between pre-laying and laying phases, as shown by levels of key hormones and nutrients. The expression patterns of intestinal mucosa directly responded to metabolic and nutritional changes at the beginning of the laying phase in maturing high-yielding strains of laying hens, focusing on signaling events like RANK/RANKL signaling and cellular senescence. Further research on the timing of sexual maturity in laying hens is needed to understand metabolic requirements and associated endogenous mechanisms.

Role of Steroid Hormones in the Pathogenesis of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Meng Yang et al.

Summary: Steroid hormones play a role in regulating lipid homeostasis and may impact the development of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Modulating steroid hormone levels or receptor activity could be potential therapeutic strategies for preventing NAFLD.

The Interdependency and Co-Regulation of the Vitamin D and Cholesterol Metabolism

Tara Warren et al.

Summary: The overlap between vitamin D and cholesterol metabolism pathways is significant, yet our understanding of their independent and co-regulation is limited. Research highlights the relationships between vitamin D supplementation, total cholesterol, and LDL-C status, as well as the consistency between latitude, vitamin D, and cholesterol status. Furthermore, some results cannot be explained with current knowledge of molecular mechanisms.

Genetic architecture and major genes for backfat thickness in pig lines of diverse genetic backgrounds

Miguel Gozalo-Marcilla et al.

Summary: This study conducted a large genome-wide association study for backfat thickness using data from eight lines of diverse genetic backgrounds and identified 264 significant SNP associations across 27 genomic regions. The results confirm the polygenic architecture of backfat thickness and highlight the role of genes involved in energy homeostasis, adipogenesis, fatty acid metabolism, and insulin signalling pathways in fat deposition in pigs. Additionally, several less well-understood metabolic pathways were found to contribute to backfat development, such as those related to phosphate, calcium, and vitamin D homeostasis.
