Application and discussion of statistical seismology in probabilistic seismic hazard assessment studies

Weilai Pei et al.

Summary: Earthquakes pose a major threat to human lives and property, driving the development of earthquake prediction and statistical seismology. Assessing earthquake risks and planning based on modern earthquake catalogues is effective in most regions.

Earthquake potential in the peripheral zones of the Ordos Block based on contemporary GPS strain rates and seismicity

Shoubiao Zhu et al.

Summary: This study identifies potential locations of future catastrophic earthquakes in the peripheral zones of the Ordos Block through calculating strain rates and seismicity. The results show that high strain rates are mainly distributed in the peripheral zones of the Ordos Block, in agreement with geology and seismicity. Based on seismic potential, historical and modern seismicity, and neotectonic structures, the study concludes that the west end of the Weihe Graben, southwest corner of the Ordos, is the most likely earthquake-prone area in the future.

Present-day crustal deformation in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau and its correlation with spatiotemporal seismicity characteristics

Hailu Chen et al.

Summary: This study enhances our understanding of the spatiotemporal evolution of seismicity in the Northeastern Tibetan Plateau (NTP), a region with numerous faults and intense seismic activity. The research reveals a complex diffuse deformation pattern and identifies the accumulation of high maximum shear-strain rates on large strike-slip faults. The region is categorized into two domains based on correlation analysis, with different patterns of seismicity evolution observed. This study provides insights for future seismic risk evaluations in the NTP.

Block Kinematics in North China From GPS Measurements

Wei Wang et al.

Summary: The deformation of the North China Craton is essential for understanding the tectonic processes and deformation mechanisms in the region. Different parts of the craton exhibit different deformation patterns, with the western part characterized by strike-slip and extensional deformation, and the eastern part experiencing right-lateral and shortening slips. The deformation in the eastern part is influenced by Pacific subduction, while the deformation in the western part is related to India-Eurasia collision. The study suggests that even slow-slip faults in the craton have the potential to produce strong earthquakes.

Microseismicity along Xiaojiang Fault Zone (Southeastern Tibetan Plateau) and the characterization of interseismic fault behavior

Yijian Zhou et al.

Summary: This study utilizes a seismic network to analyze microseismic activities, fault structures, and their properties along the Xiaojiang Fault Zone (XJF). The results show that the major faults have low seismicity, while off-fault branches exhibit intensive microseismicity. The slip rate on these off-fault branches is correlated with seismic activities, suggesting a potential barrier for future big earthquakes. Additionally, there is an along-strike variation in depth between creeping and locked fault portions. The study concludes that XJF is in the late stage of the inter-seismic period.

3D GNSS Velocity Field Sheds Light on the Deformation Mechanisms in Europe: Effects of the Vertical Crustal Motion on the Distribution of Seismicity

Jesus Pina-Valdes et al.

Summary: Crustal deformation and seismic activity in Europe are not well understood, as the causal mechanisms are usually studied separately in small regions. In this study, a 3D secular velocity field is analyzed to investigate the influence of different driving processes on the deformation in Europe. The results suggest that seismic activity in Europe cannot be solely explained by edge-driven tectonic forces, and crustal flexure processes need to be considered.

Complex fault geometry of the 1976 Ms 7.8 Tangshan earthquake source region in North China

Guangwei Zhang et al.

Summary: Investigating the fine structure of fault zones is essential for understanding the mechanism of large earthquake nucleation. The study on the complex fault geometry of the Tangshan fault zone in North China provides detailed information on the fault zone structural features and suggests that the ascending of hot mantle material into the lower crust may have weakened the Tangshan fault zone and generated the 1976 Ms. 7.8 Tangshan earthquake.

Ongoing Lithospheric Alteration of the North China Craton Revealed by Surface-Wave Tomography and Geodetic Observations

J. K. Feng et al.

Summary: The lithospheric structure of the North China Craton shows significant variation in the north-south direction, with the eastern region experiencing intense destruction in the Mesozoic. This destruction facilitated shearing in the late Cenozoic, resulting in lithospheric thinning, asthenospheric upwelling, and seismic activity. These findings suggest a transition from Pacific subduction-dominated tectonics to India-Asia collision-dominated lithospheric deformation in the Cenozoic, and ongoing alteration of the North China Craton's lithosphere.

Frame Wobbling Causing Crustal Deformation Around the Ordos Block

Ming Hao et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the Ordos block exhibits rigid motion with negligible anticlockwise rotation; there is no significant differential motion and strain within the block, but it is influenced by adjacent blocks moving in different directions at different rates; deformation caused by adjacent blocks mainly occurs along the boundaries of grabens and fold-thrust fault zones.

Aftershocks and Background Seismicity in Tangshan and the Rest of North China

Yuxuan Chen et al.

Summary: This study used the nearest-neighbor method to identify recent moderate earthquakes in the Tangshan region as likely aftershocks of the 1976 Great Tangshan earthquake. The background seismicity in North China was found to be relatively stable but varied over time, with higher seismic activity observed in major active tectonic zones.

Influence of crustal rheology and heterogeneity on tectonic stress accumulation characteristics of North China constrained by GNSS observations

Yuan Gao et al.

Summary: The North China region is characterized by frequent earthquakes and widespread lithospheric heterogeneity and fault distribution. Studies have shown that the main stress is distributed in the northeast and northwest, correlating with earthquake depth, possibly being a major factor influencing earthquake occurrence. Significant stress on faults is mainly found around the Ordos Block and in the northeastern part of North China, consistent with the frequent seismic activity in these regions.
