Pool boiling heat transfer enhancement on the hybrid surfaces coupling capillary wick and minichannels

Yonghai Zhang et al.

Summary: By designing and processing enhanced hybrid surfaces and considering the coupled effects of capillary wick and minichannels, the pool boiling heat transfer performance of these surfaces was improved. The impact of the ring groove and capillary wick on the boiling heat transfer was analyzed, and high heat flux and heat transfer coefficient were achieved with the hybrid surfaces. A correlation for predicting the critical heat flux on these hybrid surfaces covered capillary wick was proposed.

Saturated pool boiling heat transfer enhancement of R245fa based on the surface covered by sintered copper powder with and without nanostructure

Chao Dang et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the pool boiling characteristics on enhanced surfaces with sintered copper powder coatings. Different enhanced surfaces, including sintered porous layers with copper powder particles and their nano-treated surfaces, were tested. The results showed that coating sintered copper powder porous layer effectively improved the boiling heat transfer performance, with the maximum heat transfer coefficient and CHF value enhancement reaching 151% and 160% of the plain copper surface, respectively. The enhanced surfaces triggered nucleation at lower wall superheats compared to the plain copper surface, and after nano-treatment, the heat transfer enhancement was further improved at medium and low heat flux.

Microlayer evaporation governs heat transfer enhancement during pool boiling from microstructured surfaces

Manohar Bongarala et al.

Summary: Enhancement of boiling heat transfer can be achieved by introducing surface microstructures, yet the exact mechanism behind this enhancement is still not completely understood. This study establishes microlayer evaporation from the liquid layer underneath vapor bubbles as the key mechanism for the enhancement in boiling heat transfer coefficient on microstructured surfaces.

Enhanced pool boiling on micro-nano composited surfaces with nanostructures on micro-pin-fins

Bin Liu et al.

Summary: The distribution of nanostructures on micro-nano composited surfaces significantly affects the pool boiling heat transfer performance. Surfaces with nanostructures covering the top and bottom sides have the lowest wall superheat, while surfaces with nanostructures etched at the top corners or edges have higher heat transfer coefficients. Bubbles are mainly generated on the tops of micro-pin-fins, alleviating the blockage of capillary wicking channels in high heat flux regions. Moreover, the condensation effect of subcooled liquid on the bubbles generated at the tops of micro-pin-fins is stronger.

Experimental investigation of pool boiling heat transfer on the radial micro-pillar surfaces

Yonghai Zhang et al.

Summary: An experimental study was conducted on pool boiling heat transfer with heterogeneous micro-pillar surfaces. It was found that these surfaces significantly improved the heat transfer performance with an earlier onset of nucleate boiling and improved heat transfer coefficient. The critical heat flux was dependent on the heat transfer area enhancement ratio at high subcooled temperature. Additionally, the overall heat transfer coefficient of micro-pillar surfaces first increased to a critical value, and then decreased with the increase of heat flux.

Saturated pool boiling heat transfer of HFE-7100 on sintered copper powder and wire mesh microporous surfaces: A comparison study

Yawen Jiang et al.

Summary: This article discusses the impact of different surfaces on boiling heat transfer and improves the heat transfer performance by using two different wetting characteristics. The experimental results show that the biphilic surface exhibits good performance in pool boiling but is prone to falling off under long-term operating conditions.

Enhanced pool boiling on composite microstructured surfaces with microcavities on micro-pin-fins

Bin Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, composite microstructured surfaces with different numbers of microcavities were prepared, and their effect on pool boiling performance in HFE-7100 was investigated. The results showed that the composite microstructured surfaces exhibited reduced wall superheats and increased heat transfer coefficients compared to a micro-pin-fined surface and a smooth surface. Among them, the surface with 16 microcavities showed the best boiling heat transfer performance in the nucleate boiling region.

Nanoparticle-Assisted Pool Boiling Heat Transfer on Micro-Pin-Fin Surfaces

Zhen Cao et al.

Summary: The study focused on enhancing saturated pool boiling of FC-72 by surface modifications, resulting in significant improvements in heat transfer coefficient and critical heat flux. Experimental results showed that the application of micro-pin fins and copper nanoparticles could further enhance heat transfer performance. High-speed bubble visualizations and model analysis revealed that small bubble departure diameters and high bubble departure frequencies were crucial for improving heat transfer coefficients.
