Gay-Straight Alliances, School Functioning, and Mental Health: Associations for Students of Color and LGBTQ Students

Summary: Research found that students in schools with GSAs had better school functioning, lower substance use, and better mental health. The association between GSA presence and mental health and substance use was not as strong for students of color as it was for non-Hispanic white students. Additionally, LGBTQ students did not benefit as much in terms of school functioning from the presence of GSAs compared to non-LGBTQ students.
