Transfer or Translation? Rethinking Traveling Technologies from the Global South

Summary: In the twenty-first century, technology flows are becoming increasingly diverse, calling for the update of concepts and frameworks. Reflecting on the tensions of technology transfer, technology translation is proposed as a complementary conceptual framework to understand the flow of technology. Taking a socio-technical approach, technology translation views artifacts as socially shaped with distributed agency, making technology flows unstable and unpredictable.

Bring Your Own Workers: Chinese OFDI, Chinese overseas workers, and collective labor rights in Africa

Summary: Chinese multinational corporations in Africa have been criticized for hiring Chinese expatriates. This study finds that Chinese FDI increases the number of Chinese workers, but only in host countries with weaker collective labor rights. Additionally, Chinese MNCs hire more non-native workers only when investing in countries with weaker collective labor rights. The findings highlight the role of host countries' institutions in the impact of FDI.

Water Infrastructure in a small west African city: Situating sharing and volunteering in the making of urban infrastructures

Summary: This paper explores the practice of water sharing and volunteering in Bafat'a, Guinea-Bissau. The study finds that most residents of the small city are involved in water sharing as both donors and receivers. Additionally, the operation of the piped water supply relies on a large pool of volunteers or low-paid laborers, who often live in areas without access to this water system. The paper argues that water sharing is not only crucial for the circulation of water and infrastructure in the city, but also serves as a political act and support for or resistance against certain water regimes. It also highlights the role of water utility volunteers in sustaining a social infrastructure and providing career, training, income, and networking opportunities.
