Mechanical stress analysis of various GPHE corrugated plates during the assembly and in working conditions

G. S. M. Martins et al.

Summary: The characteristics and materials of gasketed plate heat exchangers (GPHE) in a given industrial application are determined by thermal, hydrodynamics, structural, and environmental requirements. This study evaluated the mechanical behavior of GPHE plates during assembly and working conditions, finding that stress levels are crucial in determining the useful life of the heat exchanger. The stress levels increase with increasing static pressure and decreasing plate thickness in working conditions, and they are considerably higher in single condition.

Review of Developments in Plate Heat Exchanger Heat Transfer Enhancement for Single-Phase Applications in Process Industries

Olga Arsenyeva et al.

Summary: A plate heat exchanger (PHE) is a modern and efficient heat transfer equipment, capable of enhancing heat recuperation and energy efficiency. This paper reviews the construction and exploration developments of PHEs, as well as the methods of heat transfer intensification. The use of inclined corrugations on the surface of PHE plates is a common method to improve performance.

Plate heat exchangers: calculation of pressure drop for single phase convection in turbulent flow regime

Sergej Gusew et al.

Summary: Plate heat exchangers are crucial for technical applications, and it is important to accurately calculate pressure drop. This study introduces new geometrical parameters for calculating the pressure drop of the distribution zone, resulting in a three-component model that shows good agreement with experimental data and explains differences in data from other authors.

Experimental Investigation into the Effect of Elastic Deformation of Plates on the Friction Resistance of Plate Heat Exchangers

A. S. Matyash et al.

Summary: Experimental tests were conducted on a large-scale bench to determine the coefficient of friction resistance. The tests involved collapsible plate heat exchangers with varying plate pack configurations. The results showed a significant difference in the friction drag coefficient for the same heat exchanger model at similar Reynolds numbers, which was attributed to the elastic deformation of the plates caused by pressure drop. By refining the algorithm for processing experimental data, the coefficients and exponents necessary for calculating friction resistance were determined, and the values of critical Reynolds numbers were refined as well. The relationship between elastic deformation and the size/type of corrugation on the chevron surface has not been established.

Flow maldistribution and heat transfer characteristics in plate and shell heat exchangers

L. Beckedorff et al.

Summary: This study presents an experimental and theoretical analysis of the flow and heat transfer characteristics of a plate and shell heat exchanger (PSHE). The results show that flow maldistribution increases the pressure drop and reduces the heat transfer performance of the heat exchanger. The overall performance of the shell side is inferior to the plate side, with higher maldistribution and lower Nusselt number. The study concludes that the thermo-hydraulic performance of the gasketed plate heat exchanger (PHE) is superior to the PSHE, but the PSHE is suitable for high pressure and high-temperature applications.
