Computation offloading in mobile edge computing networks: A survey

Chuan Feng et al.

Summary: This paper presents a comprehensive survey of computation offloading in Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) networks, covering applications, offloading objectives, and offloading approaches. The key issues in offloading objectives, such as delay minimization, energy consumption minimization, revenue maximization, and system utility maximization, are discussed. The methods to achieve these objectives, including mathematical solver, heuristic algorithms, Lyapunov optimization, game theory, and Markov Decision Process (MDP) and Reinforcement Learning (RL), are compared. Finally, the current challenges and future directions of computation offloading in MEC networks are analyzed from various aspects.

D2D-Assisted Multi-User Cooperative Partial Offloading, Transmission Scheduling and Computation Allocating for MEC

Jie Peng et al.

Summary: By discussing joint multi-user cooperative partial offloading, transmission scheduling and computation allocating for device-to-device (D2D) underlay mobile edge computing (MEC), this paper formulates a customized application offloading model aiming to minimize network-wide response latency and energy consumption. An online resource coordinating and allocating scheme (ORCAS) is proposed to solve the non-convex and non-smooth optimization problem, showing superior performance in terms of driving application response cost convergence to the minimum and adapting to dynamic situations of stochastic user demands and channel states.

Computation Offloading Scheduling for Deep Neural Network Inference in Mobile Computing

Yubin Duan et al.

Summary: The quality of service for intelligent applications on mobile devices relies heavily on the inference speed of Deep Neural Network (DNN) models. Cooperative DNN inference is an efficient way to reduce inference latency by offloading tasks to cloud servers, but communication volume becomes a bottleneck. Research focuses on reducing communication volume by finding optimal partition points and formulating offloading pipeline scheduling. By optimizing path-wise and layer-wise schedulers for DNN structures and proposing a heuristic based on topological sort for general-structure DAGs, the inference latency of DNN models can be minimized on mobile devices.
