A novel periodic beam with multilayer acoustic black holes for deep sub-wavelength vibration attenuation

Cang He et al.

Summary: This paper presents a sandwich beam design that combines the features of Acoustic Black Hole (ABH) and local resonance mechanism for sub-wavelength vibration reduction. Parametric analysis shows that increasing ABH power and reducing truncation thickness can widen the frequency band gaps, while the mass of the viscoelastic layer benefits attenuation intensity. Inserting stiffeners to alleviate stress concentration has negligible impact on the transmission spectra.

Attenuation band splitting in a finite plate strip with two-dimensional acoustic black holes

Bing Han et al.

Summary: This paper reports an unusual splitting phenomenon in a finite plate strip with two-dimensional acoustic black holes (ABHs). The resonance peak that separates the wide attenuation band predicted by a bandgap (BG) splits it into two attenuation bands in the finite strip, challenging the common belief. The study clarifies the underlying mechanism and demonstrates that the splitting can be tuned by disrupting the structural details of the ABH strips.

Evanescent waves in a metabeam attached with lossy acoustic black hole pillars

Jie Deng et al.

Summary: In this paper, a metabeam with periodically distributed integrated acoustic black holes (IABHs) is proposed. The thickness of the base beam remains unchanged, making it suitable for load-bearing applications. The ABH pillars act as dynamic vibration absorbers (DVAs), providing abundant modes with high damping performance and generating resonance and bandgaps to stop wave propagation.

Flexural wave manipulation in perforated metamaterial plates with acoustic black holes interconnected by piezoelectric studs

Wenliang Gao et al.

Summary: This research presents a novel perforated metamaterial plate with acoustic black holes (ABHs) interconnected by piezoelectric studs for flexural wave manipulation. It derives the governing equations of the metamaterial plate using the differential quadrature element method and the first-order shear deformation plate theory. The proposed model is validated by comparing with finite element simulation results, and the wave propagation characteristics are obtained. The results show that the introduction of piezoelectric patches in the studs brings wider complete bandgaps (BGs) and stronger collimation effect at lower frequencies.

A two-dimensional wave and Rayleigh-Ritz method for complex dispersion in periodic arrays of circular damped acoustic black holes

Jie Deng et al.

Summary: In this paper, we address the complex dispersion of two-dimensional periodic arrays of circular acoustic black holes (ABHs) using the extended wave and Rayleigh-Ritz method (WRRM). By solving the eigenvalue problems with an iteration method, we obtain the complex dispersion surface and equi-frequency contours of the ABH arrays. The validity of the two-dimensional WRRM is confirmed by comparing with finite element simulations, and the method is applied to calculate the complex dispersion of infinite ABH strips and arrays.

Topological interface states in deep-subwavelength phononic beams

Seongmin Park et al.

Summary: We propose deep-subwavelength phononic beams that support topological interface states (TISs) at ultra-low frequencies. The beams are designed using unit cells with acoustic black hole (ABH) configurations to obtain the first band gap at low frequencies, where the unit cell size is much smaller than the wavelength of the wave. By modifying the ABH configuration and breaking the inversion symmetry of the unit cell, we control the topological phases of the phononic beams and connect two topologically distinct beams to produce the TIS in their low band gaps.

Wave attenuation of a laminated acoustic black hole array in a load-bearing beam structure

Cang He et al.

Summary: Acoustic Black Hole (ABH) is a wedged taper that can slow down bending wave speed in thin-walled structures. However, its application is limited by the weakened structural strength caused by digging holes. We propose a compound layout with acoustically soft materials to retain structural topology and enhance load-bearing capacity.

Vibration isolation by a periodic beam with embedded acoustic black holes based on a hybrid dynamics method

Bowen Yao et al.

Summary: This work investigates the vibration isolation of a beam structure embedded with periodic embedded symmetric ABHs. The vibration transmission of a single unit is first studied using the Riccati transfer matrix method (RTMM), and then a hybrid dynamics method (HDM) is proposed to derive the vibration transmission solution of the beam with multiple ABHs. The proposed HDM provides an efficient tool for solving the vibration response of the beam with periodic embedded ABHs.

Ultra-low frequency broadband gap optimization of 1D periodic structure with dual power-law acoustic black holes

Hui Sheng et al.

Summary: The study investigates the ultra-low frequency broadband gap in a one-dimensional structure embedded with ABHs with power-law material properties, using the Transfer Matrix Method. The results show that the dual power-law ABH structure has excellent ultra-low frequency performance due to the reduction of dual power-law local stiffness. Optimization through parameter analysis and NSGA-II combined with TMM provides a trade-off between lower bandgaps and higher stiffness, leading to the design of periodic DP-ABHs with ultra-low broadband gaps meeting stiffness requirements.
