Comparison of resistance to pest infestation between native and exotic mangrove species

Herbivory in southeastern Brazilian mangroves: An analysis of 11 years of litterfall monitoring

Summary: Severe defoliation of mangrove species has been observed worldwide, including in a mangrove in southeastern Brazil where a lepidopteran caterpillar outbreak caused significant leaf litter reduction. The most affected species, Avicennia schaueriana, experienced a decline in leaf litter production of 43% to 86% since 2009 until the peak defoliation in 2011. Recovery of leaf litter production took 8 years.

Canopy height, rather than neighborhood effects, shapes leaf herbivory in a tropical rainforest

Summary: Factors shaping interspecific variations in herbivory have long been a puzzle for ecologists, and several hypotheses have been proposed to explain such variations. In a tropical rainforest in Yunnan Province, China, 6732 leaves from 129 species were collected to investigate the role of canopy height, neighboring species' diversity, composition and structural heterogeneity, and leaf traits in shaping herbivory patterns. The results showed that leaf herbivory decreased with canopy height and specific leaf area (SLA), but increased with leaf size. The presence of neighboring species, however, did not affect herbivory. These findings highlight the importance of vertical structure in shaping herbivory patterns in natural communities.

Introduced mangroves escape damage from marine and terrestrial enemies

Summary: The enemy release hypothesis suggests that introduced species often leave their enemies behind when introduced to a new range. This study compared the effects of enemies on native and introduced populations of red mangroves and found that introduced mangroves have fewer enemies and less damage compared to native mangroves. This supports the idea that escaping from enemies allows introduced species to thrive.

Effects of plant diversity and leaf traits on insect herbivory in plantation and natural forests

Summary: Conversion from natural forest to timber plantation can lead to changes in community structure, diversity, and plant-plant and plant-animal interactions. This study found that the total herbivory did not change among forest types, but there were variations in herbivory among different tree species. Leaf damage caused by different feeding guilds was influenced by leaf traits and forest structure. The findings support the resource concentration hypothesis and highlight the importance of leaf traits in mediating the impact of insect feeding guilds on leaf herbivory.

Newly-developed three-band hyperspectral vegetation index for estimating leaf relative chlorophyll content of mangrove under different severities of pest and disease

Summary: This study aimed to develop a new hyperspectral vegetation index (VI) for estimating leaf chlorophyll content in mangrove forests under pest and disease stress. The results showed that a three-band VI constructed from wavelengths in the red edge region had a stronger correlation with leaf chlorophyll content. It also had higher model accuracy, resistance to noise, sensitivity to high chlorophyll content, and reasonable spatial visualization quality. This newly-developed VI has the potential for early warning of mangrove pest and disease.

Plant-functional traits drive insect herbivory in a tropical rainforest tree community

Summary: This study analyzed how leaf-functional traits and wood density of 69 woody species in a tropical rain forest in southern Mexico could explain insect herbivory. Three functional groups were detected, related to low nutritional quality, resistance, and tolerance to herbivory. Herbivory tolerant species had the highest damage by herbivores, while species in the defensive resistance and low nutrition syndromes had lower herbivory levels.

Discriminating Xylella fastidiosa from Verticillium dahliae infections in olive trees using thermal- and hyperspectral-based plant traits

Summary: A three-stage machine learning algorithm was proposed to distinguish Vd infections from Xf infections, using datasets from 27 olive orchards affected by Xf and Vd outbreaks in Italy and Spain between 2011 and 2017. Plant traits derived from airborne hyperspectral and thermal imagery successfully discriminated Xf from Vd infections. The method generated false-positive rates of 9% for Vd infections and 4% for Xf infections, with overall accuracies of 98% and 92%, respectively.
