Investigation of the Vertical Distribution Characteristics and Microphysical Properties of Summer Mineral Dust Masses over the Taklimakan Desert Using an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

Xiaowen Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, the vertical characteristics of near-surface dust mass concentrations in different size fractions were investigated using a UAV in the Taklimakan Desert. The results showed an increasing trend of particle mass, number concentration, effective radius, and volume concentration from clear sky to dust storm scenarios. These findings contribute to our understanding of mineral dust vertical characteristics and provide valuable reference information for lidar inversion and dust simulations.

Dust particles transport during the rare strong sandstorm process in Northern China in early year 2021

Xianmang Xu et al.

Summary: Several sandstorms occurred in northern China in early 2021, with the most severe one happening on March 15. The concentration of PM10 in the air reached high levels, resulting in the highest monthly mean concentration in recent years. The study suggests that the uplift of dust particles from desert areas and long-distance transport are important factors contributing to the outbreak of large-scale sandstorms. The development of Mongolian cyclone and the arid areas in northern China also played a role in intensifying the sandstorms.

Summary: Atmospheric deposition plays a crucial role in supplying nutrients to marine phytoplankton, which is the base of marine food webs. Understanding the spatial and temporal variability of nutrient-bearing aerosols from various sources and their impact on the ocean is essential for studying marine ecosystems.

Interannual Variability in the Source Location of North African Dust Transported to the Amazon

Anne E. Barkley et al.

Summary: African dust is transported to South America during winter and spring, with the main source being either Western or Central North Africa. The variability in dust source region is attributed to differences in the strength of the Libyan High and precipitation over the Gulf of Guinea and Atlantic Ocean.

A New Algorithm of Atmospheric Boundary Layer Height Determined from Polarization Lidar

Bisen Han et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new method to determine the atmospheric boundary layer height (ABLH) and compares it with existing methods. The results show that the new method is consistent with the existing methods for non-dust events, but overestimates the stable boundary layer and underestimates the heights of the mixing layer.

Long-Range Transport and Evolution of Saharan Dust Over East Asia From 2007 to 2020

Qiantao Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the long-range transport of Saharan dust over East Asia from 2007 to 2020. The results show that a significant portion of dust events in East Asia originate from the Sahara Desert, and the transported dust is usually distributed in the upper troposphere. The total amount of transported Saharan dust in East Asia is estimated to be around 33.05 +/- 9.78 Tg/yr between 2010 and 2015, with a significant contribution to dust loading in the upper troposphere in Northern China during spring.

Simulations of aerosol pH in China using WRF-Chem (v4.0): sensitivities of aerosol pH and its temporal variations during haze episodes

Xueyin Ruan et al.

Summary: Aerosol pH is a crucial property in atmospheric chemistry and has significant impacts on air quality, climate, and health. This study utilized the WRF-Chem model to simulate the pH of PM2.5 over China during a period of heavy haze episodes in Beijing, and examined the sensitivity of modeled pH to various factors. The findings highlight the importance of NH3 emissions and aerosol phase state assumption in accurately predicting aerosol pH.

In situ observation of warm atmospheric layer and the heat contribution of suspended dust over the Tarim Basin

Chenglong Zhou et al.

Summary: Based on radiosonde observations, this study verifies the existence of an anomalously warm atmospheric layer over the Tarim Basin in northwest China and quantifies the heat contribution of suspended dust. The warm atmospheric layer seems to be a northward extension of the Tibel Plateau's elevated heat source, which may be a controlling factor of the regional climate.

The Discovery of African Dust Transport to the Western Hemisphere and the Saharan Air Layer

Joseph M. Prospero et al.

Summary: Research on wind-borne mineral dust is of great interest due to its role in climate modulation. North Africa is Earth's largest and most persistently active dust source, expected to be greatly impacted by climate change. Studies have shown the link between dust transport and African climate, with a focus on the initial discovery of African dust in the Caribbean Basin.

Size-Resolved Community Structure of Bacteria and Fungi Transported by Dust in the Middle East

Daniella Gat et al.

Summary: The study found that the source of aerosols is the main variable affecting the composition of fungal and bacterial communities, with significant differences between communities representing particles of different sizes. There is evidence of significant transport and mixing of bacterial communities during dust events, while fungal communities show a high dependence on aerosol sources.

Aerosol radiative impact during the summer 2019 heatwave produced partly by an inter-continental Saharan dust outbreak - Part 1: Short-wave dust direct radiative effect

Carmen Cordoba-Jabonero et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the short-wave direct radiative effect during the 2019 summer heatwave in Europe, partly caused by a Saharan dust outbreak. The results showed that the dust produced a cooling effect on the surface, with mean daily DRE of -9.1 and -2.5Wm(-2) in Barcelona and Leipzig, respectively, with Leipzig having a higher Df/DD DRE ratio than Barcelona.
