Fate and Changes in Moisture Evaporated From the Tibetan Plateau (2000-2020)

Chi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study tracked and quantified the moisture originating from the Tibetan Plateau (TP) and its influence on downwind regions. The findings show that the TP moisture has the strongest impact on precipitation in the eastern boundary of the TP, gradually diminishing eastward. The TP moisture ratio in precipitation reaches its highest over the central-eastern TP, accounting for over 30%. A significant portion of TP annual evaporation is recycled within the TP, while the majority is reprecipitated over terrestrial China. The recycling of TP moisture exhibits seasonal variation determined by precipitation, evaporation, and wind patterns.

Considerable influences of recycled moistures and summer monsoons to local precipitation on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau

Xiaoyan Guo et al.

Summary: The study reveals significant seasonal variations in precipitation isotopes on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau, influenced by local climate conditions and transitions of moisture sources. Factors such as sub-cloud evaporation and monsoonal activities play a significant role in local precipitation, with different controlling factors and moisture sources found between representative sites. Additionally, findings demonstrate the impact of westerlies, recycled moisture, and summer monsoon circulation on isotopic composition of precipitation, with East Asian and Indian Summer Monsoons contributing considerably to local precipitation.

Precipitation recycling ratio and water vapor sources on the Tibetan Plateau

Kun Yang et al.

Summary: Precipitation recycling ratio and water vapor sources are key aspects of regional water cycle, and understanding their changes is crucial. Existing studies on the Tibetan Plateau have controversial results, but there is no fundamental conflict among them within the same theoretical framework.

Reduction of uncertainties in surface heat flux over the Tibetan Plateau from ERA-Interim to ERA5

Yufei Xin et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the uncertainties of ERA5 and ERA-Interim on the Tibetan Plateau. The results showed that ERA5 effectively corrected the overestimation of sensible heat flux and latent heat flux. ERA5 showed better agreement with GLEAM in terms of latent heat flux.

The imbalance of the Asian water tower

Tandong Yao et al.

Summary: The Hindu Kush-Karakoram-Himalayan system, known as the Third Pole, is the largest global store of frozen water after the polar regions. It provides water supply to almost 2 billion people. However, atmospheric warming has caused an imbalance in this system, altering water resources in downstream countries. Future predictions suggest that global warming will amplify this imbalance, alleviating water scarcity in some regions while increasing it in others.

Recent decrease in summer precipitation over the Iberian Peninsula closely links to reduction in local moisture recycling

Yubo Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the changes in precipitation in the Iberian Peninsula and assesses the impact of local moisture recycling and external moisture on summer precipitation reduction. The findings suggest that the decrease in local moisture contribution and the feedback with drier land surface exacerbate the local moisture scarcity and summer drought.

Evaluation of Hourly PWV Products Derived From ERA5 and MERRA-2 Over the Tibetan Plateau Using Ground-Based GNSS Observations by Two Enhanced Models

Liangke Huang et al.

Summary: This study systematically assessed the hourly PWV values derived from ERA5 and MERRA-2 by comparing them with 33 GNSS stations over the Tibetan Plateau from 2017 to 2018. It was found that ERA5 had slightly higher accuracy compared to MERRA-2, possibly due to its higher spatial resolution.
