Developing rural Chinese children's computational thinking through -game-based learning and parental involvement

Xiangling Zhang et al.

Summary: The lack of teachers and equipment is a major obstacle to the implementation of Computational Thinking (CT) in education, particularly for rural schools. This study fills the research gap by investigating the impact of three different learning approaches on the CT skills and attitudes of grade-two primary school students in a rural area in China. The findings show that Game-Based Learning (GBL) approaches significantly enhance students' CT skills compared to traditional lectures, and GBL with parental involvement also enhances students' attitudes toward learning CT.

Offline and online user experience of gamified robotics for introducing computational thinking: Comparing engagement, game mechanics and coding motivation

Leonardo Madariaga et al.

Summary: As we focus on defining and implementing computational thinking within education, engaging children with coding activities remains relatively unexplored within the curriculum. Our study uses a human-centered design approach to guide children through the co-design, implementation, and evaluation of a board game. The use of tangible robotics in the offline version leads to greater motivation and involvement, showing that connecting coding problems with the mathematics curriculum can successfully engage participants in collaborative computational thinking activities.

Effects of different feedback strategies on academic achievements, learning motivations, and self-efficacy for novice programmers

Qian Fu et al.

Summary: This study designed four different two-step programming feedback strategies and explored their impact on novice programmers' academic achievement, learning motivations, and self-efficacy. The results showed that none of the feedback strategies can promote novice programmers' learning motivations and self-efficacy, but using programming template and correct code without comments can improve academic achievement of these novice programmers. Further analysis of students' reflection demonstrated that providing programming template and correct code without comments had advantage in helping students interpret code, thereby guiding the students to think comprehensively and face challenges positively, as well as promoting student success when learning to program.
