Failure analysis and experimental study on bolted composite joints based on continuum damage mechanics

Xi Li et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the numerical analysis and experimental evaluation of failures and damages in the bolted joints of CFRP composite laminates under tensile loads. By establishing failure criteria and a mechanical model, the strength and damage of composite joints were accurately predicted. A new method was also proposed to improve the accuracy and efficiency of evaluating fracture angles.

Bolt insertion damage and mechanical behaviors investigation of CFRP/CFRP interference fit bolted joints

Yangjie Zuo et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the damages caused by bolt insertion in Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) interference fit bolted joints. The mechanical behaviors of the joints under static and cyclic loads were experimentally evaluated. The results show that the hole entrance in the upper laminate and the laminate boundary near the hole wall are the most critical regions for damages during bolt insertions. However, these damages have minimal influence on the static failure loads and fatigue failure modes of the joints. The interference fit can improve the fatigue resistance of the laminate hole, but the bolt seems to experience a more critical local fatigue loading condition.

Analysis of multi-bolt composite joints with a user-defined finite element for the evaluation of load distribution and secondary bending

V. G. Belardi et al.

Summary: This paper demonstrates the capabilities of the Composite Bolted Joint Element (CBJE) methodology in analyzing single-lap multi-bolt joints. The FE modeling approach exploits user-defined finite elements and elastic characterization of the bolted region through analytical models. The results of the CBJE method are successfully validated and compared with reference solid models using experimental data.
