iFogSim2: An extended iFogSim simulator for mobility, clustering, and microservice management in edge and fog computing environments

Redowan Mahmud et al.

Summary: Internet of Things (IoT) is the foundation for next-generation Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs), and the large amount of data generated by IoT devices requires low-latency processing. Edge/Fog computing, as an extension of cloud computing in the IoT network, can meet these requirements. However, the structural and operational differences of Edge/Fog infrastructure make it challenging to directly apply cloud-based service regulations. To address this issue, we have developed modular simulation models for Edge/Fog computing based on real datasets and extended existing simulators.

WiseFuse: Workload Characterization and DAG Transformation for ServerlessWorkflows

Ashraf Mahgoub et al.

Summary: This paper characterizes the production workloads of serverless directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) at a major cloud provider. It identifies two major factors that limit performance and proposes WiseFuse, an automated approach to optimize the execution plan for serverless DAGs. WiseFuse introduces three optimizations: Fusion, Bundling, and Resource Allocation. Experimental evaluation using three serverless applications demonstrates that WiseFuse outperforms competing approaches in terms of latency and cost.

Netherite: Efficient Execution of Serverless Workflows

Sebastian Burckhardt et al.

Summary: Serverless computing is a popular choice for cloud service architects because it offers scalability and load-based billing with minimal developer effort. New frameworks like Durable Functions allow for the addition of stateful abstractions in serverless applications. Netherite is a novel architecture that improves latency and throughput of serverless workflows by optimizing partitioning and state persistence.
