Impacts of exogenous quorum sensing signal molecule-acylated homoserine lactones (AHLs) with different addition modes on Anammox process

Xiaojing Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the impact of N-dodecanoyl homoserine lactone (C12-HSL) on nitrogen removal, enzyme activity, and microbial community in Anammox system was investigated. Results showed that once-addition of C12-HSL had no obvious impact on Anammox. Daily-addition with different concentrations of C12-HSL slightly improved or decreased the TN removal and enzyme activity. The abundance of certain bacteria showed correlation with TN removal.

Effect of sulfur particle morphology on the performance of element sulfur-based denitrification packed-bed reactor

Heng Dong et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of different types of sulfur particles on denitrification performance in element sulfur-based denitrification packed-bed reactors. The results show that rougher sulfur particles lead to quicker stabilization of denitrification performance in the start-up stage. The reactors filled with cap-shape sulfur particles achieve the highest nitrate removal rate, which is 2.34 times higher than that of ball-shape sulfur particles. This study enhances our understanding of the relationship between sulfur particle properties and denitrification performance in ESDeN reactors.

High-rate iron sulfide and sulfur-coupled autotrophic denitrification system: Nutrients removal performance and microbial characterization

Yang Bai et al.

Summary: Iron sulfides-based autotrophic denitrification (IAD) is a cost-effective and low sludge production technology for nitrate and phosphate removal from low C:N ratio wastewater. However, its slow kinetics compared to other sulfur-based autotrophic denitrification (SAD) processes limits its application. This study constructed an iron sulfur autotrophic denitrification (ISAD) biofilter with co-electron-donors (FeS and S0) and achieved superior total nitrogen and phosphate removals at short hydraulic retention times (HRTs) through the interaction between FeS and S0. Metagenomic analysis revealed the presence of nitrate-dependent iron-oxidizing (NDFO) bacteria, sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB), and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonia (DNRA) bacteria, supporting stable nitrate reduction.

Managing microbial sulfur disproportionation for optimal sulfur autotrophic denitrification in a pilot-scale elemental sulfur packed-bed bioreactor

Yi-Lu Sun et al.

Summary: Elemental sulfur packed-bed (S0PB) bioreactors have become popular in wastewater treatment due to their carbon-free operation and low cost. However, the rapid microbial S0-disproportionation (MS0D) during deep denitrification is a drawback to this technology.

Design and operation insights concerning a pilot-scale S0-driven autotrophic denitrification packed-bed process

Yi-Lu Sun et al.

Summary: Elemental sulfur autotrophic denitrification (S0AD) is a promising method for wastewater treatment with lower costs, zero carbon dioxide emission, and minimum sludge production. This study demonstrated the effectiveness of a pilot-scale S0AD packed-bed in removing nitrate to below the national standard, with temperature and bacteria species playing important roles. The findings provide guidance for the design and operation of S0AD packed beds in practical engineering.

Comprehensive analysis of the impacts of iron-based nanoparticles and ions on Anammox process

Xiaojing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study compared the short- and long-term effects of iron-based nanoparticles and ions on Anammox sludge. The results showed that short-term exposure to Fe (II) increased Anammox activity, while Fe2O3 NPs and Fe (III) decreased it. After long-term exposure, iron had varying effects on TN removal efficiency and microbial biodiversity in the sludge. The relative abundance of Candidatus Kuenenia also varied. The impacts of the irons on the Anammox process followed the order Fe (II)(+)>Fe3O4 NPs(+)>Fe NPs(+/-)> Fe (III)(-)>Fe2O3 NPs(-).

Coupled sulfur and electrode-driven autotrophic denitrification for significantly enhanced nitrate removal

Fan Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, a coupled sulfur and electrode-driven autotrophic denitrification (SEAD) process was proposed, which achieved superior nitrate removal performance and self-balance of acidity-alkalinity capacity by regulating the applied voltage. The experiment results showed that SEAD process could enhance nitrate removal rate and reduce sulfate accumulation. Both S-0 and electrode served as active bio-carriers constructing denitrification communities and functional genes, with S-0 demonstrating greater denitrification potential as an electron donor.

Pathways regulating the enhanced nitrogen removal in a pyrite based vertical-flow constructed wetland

Zhongshuo Xu et al.

Summary: The study showed that vertical flow constructed wetlands using natural pyrite as substrate can enhance nitrate removal efficiency and promote heterotrophic denitrification to avoid nitrite accumulation. Additionally, the growth of plants in wetlands, particularly Canna indica, was better in wetlands using pyrite as substrate. High-throughput sequencing revealed differences in denitrifying bacteria, iron oxidation and reduction microorganisms, and rhizosphere microorganisms in the wetlands.
