Pockets of Possibility: Students of English in Diverse, Multilingual Secondary Schools in Austria

Elizabeth J. Erling et al.

Summary: This study found that students in non-elite, linguistically diverse small-town schools in Austria are achieving higher levels of success in English learning, which correlates with their high levels of home language proficiency. The key factors for their success include feeling comfortable and actively participating in the English classroom, as well as their teachers showing interest in their linguistic and cultural backgrounds. This research suggests that these schools create "pockets of possibility" where students can perform their multilingual identities and feel valued as members of the classroom community.
