YAP-regulated type II alveolar epithelial cell differentiation mediated by human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells in acute respiratory distress syndrome

Xiao-Yue Chen et al.

Summary: Human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) were found to ameliorate lung injury in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) by regulating Yes-associated protein (YAP) and promoting the differentiation of type II alveolar epithelial cells (AECII). The administration of hUC-MSCs improved pulmonary function, reduced inflammation, and mitigated lung injury in an ARDS mouse model.

Key Role of Mesenchymal Stromal Cell Interaction with Macrophages in Promoting Repair of Lung Injury

Mirjana Jerkic et al.

Summary: Lung macrophages play a crucial role in pulmonary innate immunity and host defense. The interaction between these macrophages and mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) has shown potential in treating inflammatory lung diseases and COVID-19. The lung microenvironment facilitates the secretion of factors by MSCs, leading to polarization of macrophages towards an immunosuppressive M2-like phenotype for tissue repair. In turn, M2-like macrophages can affect the immune regulatory function and tissue reparatory effects of MSCs.

HEMOPERFUSION USING THE LPS-SELECTIVE MESOPOROUS POLYMERIC ADSORBENT IN SEPTIC SHOCK: A MULTICENTER RANDOMIZED CLINICAL TRIAL

Sergei Rey et al.

Summary: Extracorporeal hemoperfusion (EHP) with Efferon LPS cartridges effectively improved the course and outcomes of patients with septic shock. EHP led to increased MAP and arterial oxygenation, decreased norepinephrine doses, and improved organ function. However, there were no significant improvements in survival rates at 14 and 28 days. Laboratory tests showed rapid reductions in inflammatory biomarkers only in the Efferon LPS group.

Systematic review and meta-analysis of cell therapy for COVID-19: global clinical trial landscape, published safety/efficacy outcomes, cell product manufacturing and clinical delivery

Pedro S. Couto et al.

Summary: This study summarizes 195 clinical trials of advanced cell therapies targeting COVID-19 that were registered over the two years between January 2020 to December 2021. It also analyzes the cell manufacturing and clinical delivery experience of 26 trials that published their outcomes by July 2022. The study found that MSCs provide a relative risk reduction for all-cause COVID-19 mortality and highlights the important role that cell therapy products may play as an adjunct therapy in the management of COVID-19.

Summary: Pulmonary fibrosis is a complex end-stage pathological change in the lung, with reversible fibrosis typically caused by acute lung injury or certain diseases, while idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis remains persistent and irreversible even after treatment. The pathogenesis of irreversible fibrosis, which involves factors such as apoptosis resistance, dysfunction of pulmonary vessels, mitochondria, and autophagy, as well as aberrant epithelial hyperplasia and lipid metabolism disorder, is not fully understood.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that proper exercise can significantly restrict inflammatory responses by regulating the immune system. This review discusses the mechanisms of the protective effects of exercise in LPS-induced lung injury. The results suggest that aerobic exercise can alleviate LPS-induced lung injury by suppressing oxidative stress and reducing the ratio of pro-inflammatory to anti-inflammatory cytokines.

Summary: Recent advancements in stem cell technology have provided new treatment options for patients with untreatable diseases and disorders. Human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) and multipotent mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have emerged as important players in regenerative medicine. Clinical applications of hPSCs and MSCs derived from different tissues, such as bone marrow, adipose tissue, and umbilical cord, have shown promising results in treating neurological disorders, pulmonary dysfunctions, metabolic/endocrine-related diseases, reproductive disorders, skin burns, and cardiovascular conditions. The mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effects of these stem cells vary depending on their tissue origin.
