Efficacy of access flap and pocket elimination procedures in the management of peri-implantitis: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Karolina Karlsson et al.

Summary: Access flap and pocket elimination surgery are effective procedures in the management of peri-implantitis, as they can reduce probing depth and bleeding. However, treatment outcomes are influenced by baseline conditions and the recurrence rate of the disease is high within 5 years.

The adjunctive effect of a resorbable membrane to a xenogeneic bone replacement graft in the reconstructive surgical therapy of peri-implantitis: A randomized clinical trial

Erik Regidor et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the potential adjunctive effect of a resorbable collagen membrane in the reconstructive surgical therapy of peri-implantitis. Clinical outcomes and radiographic bone levels were assessed at baseline and 12 months after surgery. The study failed to demonstrate any additional clinical or radiographic benefits of using a resorbable membrane in the treatment of peri-implantitis.

Prevention and treatment of peri-implant diseases-The EFP S3 level clinical practice guideline

David Herrera et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop clinical practice guidelines for the prevention and treatment of peri-implant diseases, emphasizing the need for interdisciplinary approaches and interventions at different stages. The guidelines provide recommendations for maintaining healthy peri-implant tissues and managing peri-implant diseases.

Decontamination of biofilm-contaminated implant surfaces: An in vitro evaluation

Yuki Ichioka et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the cleaning efficacy of two mechanical and two chemical protocols in the decontamination of implant surfaces. Results showed that air-polishing and rotating titanium brush were more effective in removing biofilm compared to other methods. The use of chemical agents did not provide significant overall benefit, and complete biofilm removal was not achieved with any treatment method.

Mechanical removal of biofilm on titanium discs: An in vitro study

Yuki Ichioka et al.

Summary: In this in vitro study, different mechanical decontamination techniques were used on biofilm-contaminated titanium surfaces to evaluate surface cleanness and cytocompatibility. The results showed that shot-blasted surfaces had higher residual bacterial counts with certain cleaning techniques, and differed in decontamination effectiveness and cytocompatibility compared to non-modified surfaces. The use of cleaning devices on shot-blasted surfaces may have some impact on cytocompatibility.

Surgical treatment of experimental peri-implantitis using mechanical and chemical decontamination procedures: A pre-clinical in vivo study

Ahmed Almohandes et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of surgical treatment on experimental peri-implantitis using different mechanical and chemical decontamination methods based on different implant surface characteristics. The results showed that the decontamination procedures did not improve outcomes following surgical treatment of experimental peri-implantitis. However, the implant surface characteristics did influence the results.

Summary: Severe bone loss (>50%) significantly increases the risk of treatment failure, and a history of periodontitis is associated with the success rate of resective surgery.

Modified minimally invasive surgical technique in human intrabony defects with or without regenerative materials-10-year follow-up of a randomized clinical trial: Tooth retention, periodontitis recurrence, and costs

Pierpaolo Cortellini et al.

Summary: This study compared the stability, complication-free survival, and costs of three treatment options (M-MIST alone, M-MIST + EMD, and M-MIST + EMD + BMDX) for intrabony defects in the long term. The results showed no significant differences in clinical attachment level differences and recurrence rates among the three groups over a 10-year period. The total cost was lower for M-MIST alone. Larger, independent studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Summary: The study evaluated the potential benefits of using a bone substitute material in reconstructive surgical therapy for peri-implantitis. The results showed that surgical therapy effectively improved the clinical and radiographic status of patients, with high patient satisfaction.

Summary: No single decontamination method demonstrated clear evidence of superiority compared to the others. The use of titanium brushes and implantoplasty showed favorable results as single decontamination methods. Systemic antibiotics may provide short-term clinical benefits in terms of treatment success.

Clinical signs, symptoms, perceptions, and impact on quality of life in patients suffering from peri-implant diseases: a university-representative cross-sectional study

Mario Romandini et al.

Summary: The study found that most peri-implant diseases are asymptomatic and often go unnoticed by patients. While unable to accurately differentiate between peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis, probing pocket depth and mucosal dehiscence were the only clinical signs associated with pre-peri-implantitis/peri-implantitis.

Diagnosis of peri-implantitis in the absence of baseline data: A diagnostic accuracy study

Mario Romandini et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of clinical and radiographic evaluations made at a single time point during follow-up. The bone levels observed at 9 years were highly accurate in identifying pronounced bone loss. In the absence of baseline documentation, a secondary case definition based on clinical findings provided the best overall diagnostic accuracy in identifying peri-implantitis cases.
