Probiotics to HIV-Infected Immunological Nonresponders: Altered Mucosal Immunity and Microbial Diversity Restricted to Ileum

Malin Holm Meyer-Myklestad et al.

Summary: The study found that probiotic intervention induced specific changes in the terminal ileum of HIV-infected immunological nonresponders (INRs), but did not affect systemic CD4 counts. Further clinical studies are needed to recommend probiotics for INRs.

Modulation of Gut Microbiota and Immune System by Probiotics, Pre-biotics, and Post-biotics

Yue Liu et al.

Summary: The human gastrointestinal tract contains a complex microbial community that interacts closely with the mucosal immune system. The gut microbiota plays a significant role in maintaining host health by providing various nutrients, regulating energy balance, modulating immune response, and defending against pathogens. Therefore, maintaining a favorable balance of gut microbiota through modulating bacterial composition, diversity, and activity is beneficial for host health.

Fermented Foods, Health and the Gut Microbiome

Natasha K. Leeuwendaal et al.

Summary: Fermented foods have been a part of human diet for thousands of years and have a diverse range in the 21st century. Research has shown that bioactive peptides and microbial metabolites in fermented foods have positive effects on human health. Each type of fermented food hosts a specific population of microorganisms, which can survive in the gut and interact with the gut microbiome. This review examines the fermentation process, microorganisms involved, potential health benefits, and the impact of fermented foods on the gut microbiome.

Probiotic effects on immunity and microbiome in HIV-1 discordant patients

Carlos Blazquez-Bondia et al.

Summary: In a clinical trial, a synbiotic intervention was found to have a slight positive effect on immune reconstitution in HIV-1 infected immuno-discordant patients, with a small increase in CD4/CD8 ratio and minor reductions in sCD14. However, a probiotic intervention alone did not show any impact on immune parameters or faecal microbiome composition.

Summary: The expert panel convened by ISAPP in September 2019 aimed to develop a clear definition for fermented foods and distinguish them from probiotics. They also discussed the safety, risks, health benefits, microbial ecology, and regulatory status of fermented foods. The panel's Consensus Statement outlined the importance and complexity of fermented foods in the human diet.

A Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Trial Assessing the Effect of VISBIOME ES Probiotic in People With HIV on Antiretroviral Therapy

Rachel M. Presti et al.

Summary: In this study, participants receiving Visbiome Extra Strength (ES) showed characteristics of safety and good tolerance. However, compared to the placebo group, Visbiome ES did not have a significant impact on inflammatory markers, cellular activation, and gut permeability. The microbiome demonstrated an increase in probiotic species and a decrease in Gammaproteobacteria in the Visbiome ES group.

Effects of Probiotics on Diarrhea and CD4 Cell Count in People Living With HIV: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Xiao-Li Zhang et al.

Summary: Probiotics can reduce the incidence of AIDS-related diarrhea in HIV/AIDS patients, with long-term use showing more significant effects than short-term use. However, probiotics have no impact on CD4 cell counts in HIV/AIDS patients. Further research is needed to explore the potential of probiotics as a preventive strategy for AIDS.
