Hydrogen bonding-induced oxygen clusters and long-lived room temperature phosphorescence from amorphous polyols

Ya-Ling Wang et al.

Summary: Developing non-conjugated luminescent polymers (NCLPs) with fluorescence and long-lived room-temperature phosphorescence is of great significance. The study investigates the luminescence behavior of polymethylol (PMO) and poly(3-butene-1,2-diol) (PBD) to reveal the clusteroluminescence (CL) mechanism. The results provide insights into the understanding of the CL mechanism of NCLPs and offer a new polymer design strategy for novel NCLP materials.

Bioplastic: an eco-friendly alternative to non-biodegradable plastic

Mangal Mangal et al.

Summary: The accumulation of non-biodegradable plastic waste is a growing problem in both land and aquatic environments. Scientific reports indicate that 100-250 megatonnes of plastic waste enter the oceans annually. India alone produces around 3.5 million metric tonnes of plastic waste each year, with only a small percentage being recycled. The dumping of non-recycled plastic waste into the environment, particularly the sea, poses a significant threat to marine life. Finding eco-friendly alternatives and reducing plastic waste generation are crucial challenges.

Hydrated Hydroxide Complex Dominates the AIE Properties of Nonconjugated Polymeric Luminophores

Taiqun Yang et al.

Summary: Nontraditional intrinsic luminescence (NTIL) with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) features has attracted attention due to their importance in understanding basic luminescence principles and potential applications. However, the modulation of nonconventional luminophores remains difficult due to limited understanding of their emission mechanisms. In this study, the emission color of nonconjugated poly(methyl vinyl ether-alt-maleic anhydride) (PMVEMA) could be easily controlled from blue to red by adjusting the alkalinity during the hydrolysis process. The nontraditional photoluminescence with AIE property is attributed to the new formed p-band state resulting from strong overlapping of clustered O atoms through space interactions. The O atom clustering, dominated by hydrated hydroxide complexes in the entangled polymer chain, plays a crucial role in the AIE property of nonconjugated PMVEMA. These findings contribute to further experimental and theoretical studies and can aid in the molecular-level design of nontraditional chromophores for optoelectronics and other applications.

Hyperbranched Polyborate: A Non-conjugated Fluorescent Polymer with Unanticipated High Quantum Yield and Multicolor Emission

Liulong Guo et al.

Summary: Non-conjugated fluorescent polymers with high fluorescence quantum yield (QY) and multicolor emission are highly desired but challenging to achieve. In this study, a new type of nonaromatic hyperbranched polyborates was reported, which exhibited both high QY and multicolor emission. The key factors contributing to the ultrahigh QY were identified as the synergistic effect of a rigid BO3 planar and flexible carbon chain, as well as the through-space dative bond in supramolecular aggregate. This work provides a new perspective for designing non-conjugated fluorescent polymers with high QY and multicolor emission.
