Advantages of Using Both Voxel- and Surface-based Morphometry in Cortical Morphology Analysis: A Review of Various Applications

Summary: This review summarizes the differences between surface-based morphometry (SBM) and voxel-based morphometry (VBM), and discusses the added value of using VBM in conjunction with SBM. The study found that both methods have their own advantages and disadvantages in detecting morphological changes. Using VBM and SBM together can help researchers and clinicians obtain a better understanding of normal neurobiological processes of the brain and improve the accuracy of detecting morphological changes in patient and control data. Additionally, two future directions for estimating cortical morphological changes, including a multi-modal parcellation method and a synthetic segmentation method, are introduced.
