Numerical modeling of cracking behaviors for the rock-inclusion composite under dynamic tensile loading

Lu Wang et al.

Summary: Using a discrete element method (DEM), this study found that both the size and strength ratio of inclusions can influence the dynamic responses of rock-inclusion composites. The nominal tensile strength (NTS) is proportional to the strength ratio but negatively correlated with the inclusion size in specimens with weak inclusions. Strength ratios primarily determine the failure modes in specimens.

Investigations on the macro-meso mechanical properties and energy dissipation mechanism of granite shear fracture under dynamic disturbance

Gang Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanical characteristics and failure mechanisms of rock shear fracture under dynamic disturbance through laboratory shear tests and numerical simulations using the particle flow code (PFC). The analysis focused on the mesoscopic degradation characteristics and energy dissipation mechanisms of rock shear fracture. The results revealed a weakening effect on the crack initiation stress under disturbance conditions, with a reduction of 20%-29%. The number of cracks increased significantly under shear action, leading to wider debris zones. The disturbance shear test also showed a reduction in energy storage capacity and failure resistance compared to the conventional shear test.

On the fracture and energy characteristics of granite containing circular cavity under variable frequency-amplitude fatigue loads

Yu Wang et al.

Summary: The presented studies aim to investigate the volumetric deformation and energy dissipation characteristics of granite samples with different cavity orientations under unusual cyclic loading conditions. The intersection between the maximum principal stress and cavity orientation was found to affect the strength, deformation, energy, and failure modes. Testing results revealed crack damage evolution and hole collapse using strain rate and energy rate. CT images of the failed rock provided new insights into the mesoscopic mechanism of hole spalling and crack coalescence. A transition from tensile failure to shear failure was observed as the cavity orientation increased relative to the principal stress.

Influences of the number of non-consecutive joints on the dynamic mechanical properties and failure characteristics of a rock-like material

Xiaoshuai Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamic mechanical properties and failure characteristics of jointed rocks using cement mortar specimens with 0-4 parallel non-consecutive joints. Split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) is employed for dynamic impact testing, while nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is used to detect pore structure deterioration. The study reveals that the number of non-consecutive joints significantly affects the mechanical properties of the specimens, with an increase in joints leading to a change in stress-strain curve shape and enhancement of ductility. The results also show that the porosity of the specimens is directly proportional to the number of joints, indicating a greater degree of damage with more joints. The failure characteristics indicate that tensile stress dominates the fracture behavior, while shear stress has limited damage.

Analysis on Rockburst Failure Energy Evolution of Model Specimen Under Stress Gradient

Gang Wang et al.

Summary: Rockburst is a pressing safety issue in deep rock and mineral exploitation, and the stress gradient is a crucial factor affecting it. By conducting loading and unloading tests on a rockburst physical model with different stress gradients using a self-developed gas-liquid composite rockburst test device, the influence mechanism of stress gradient on rockburst is explored. The spatial distribution characteristics of elastic energy based on the strain test results of the rockburst model are analyzed. The particle size distribution characteristics and throwing kinetic energy of debris after the rockburst are also studied. The research findings have significant implications for tunnel safety construction and rockburst early warning.

Baoxu Yan et al.

Summary: This study develops a numerical model based on continuous damage mechanics methods to simulate the hardening process of cemented paste backfill (CPB), and investigates the relationship between the hardening process and mechanical parameters. The results show that numerical simulation can intuitively demonstrate the relationship between crack development and particle size distribution, and quantitatively analyze the influence on strength properties.

Synergistic deformation in a combination of cemented paste backfill and rocks

Kang Zhao et al.

Summary: The study evaluated CPB specimens comprising tantalum-niobium ore tailings and rocks to elucidate the synergistic deformation mechanism. The composite body showed similar strength to single CPB specimens, with elastic modulus increasing as strength ratio decreased. Stress-strain curves were divided into four stages, and composite body exhibited good synergy between backfill and rock deformation. Additionally, the AE characteristics of the combined body reflected the synergy of the failure of the two specimens.

Summary: This paper investigates the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of cemented paste backfill (CPB) using a combination of indoor tests and machine learning. The sparrow search algorithm is used to optimize the extreme learning machine, resulting in a better prediction accuracy compared to other models. It is found that the low temperature environment has the largest effect on UCS.

Deterioration of performances and structures of cement pastes under the action of thermal cycling fatigue

Haoyu Zeng et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the influence of thermal cycling fatigue on the mechanical properties and microstructure of cement paste. The results showed that thermal cycling fatigue negatively affected the macro-mechanical characteristics, pore structure, and micromorphology of cement pastes. It also caused the propagation of microcracks and coarsened the pore structure, especially the large pores.

Microscopic acoustic emission simulation and fracture mechanism of cemented tailings backfill based on moment tensor theory

Aiping Cheng et al.

Summary: This study conducted in-depth research on the fracture mechanism of cemented tailings backfill (CTB) through experiments and theory, finding that the fracture is mainly caused by sliding friction between particles. The fracture types of AE sources can be divided into explosion, shear, and implosion, with explosion events being dominant. The research results can provide theoretical guidance for the stability control of CTB.

Weilv Wu et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the effect of interface angle on the triaxial deformation behavior and shear strength of cemented paste backfill-rock. The results showed that the interface angle played a dominant role in the failure patterns of CPB-rock, and increasing the cement content improved the brittleness of CPB matrix and increased the shear strength difference between CPB-rock and CPB.
