Fifty years of welfare state generosity

Summary: This article provides an overview of the key findings from the Comparative Welfare Entitlements Project (CWEP) which examines the generosity of unemployment, sickness, and public pension programs in 21 countries over several decades. The research reveals that there is significant variation in the level of support provided by these programs across countries, challenging the idea of historically stable configurations. It also highlights that some social democratic welfare states experienced the largest declines in generosity in recent decades and that certain conservative welfare states outperformed social democratic ones until the mid-1970s.
