The many-worlds theory of consciousness

Christian List

Summary: This paper presents a new and unconventional metaphysical theory of consciousness called the many-worlds theory. It suggests that conscious experiences are associated with different first-personally centred worlds, and combines this with modal realism to explain the subjective nature of consciousness without falling into solipsism. The paper also explores scientific theories of consciousness, such as integrated information theory, and reconsiders the hard problem of consciousness.

Center indifference and skepticism

David Builes

Summary: Many philosophers have been attracted to a restricted version of the principle of indifference in the case of self-locating belief. My first goal is to defend a more precise version of this principle and respond to existing criticisms. I then apply this principle to skeptical problems in epistemology, showing how certain beliefs can lead to skepticism.

SUBJECTIVE FACTS ABOUT CONSCIOUSNESS

Martin A. Lipman

Summary: This paper investigates the idea that the phenomenological aspects of mental states are only real from the viewpoint of the subject, and that subjects can serve as standpoints that we can adopt in our own theorizing. It explores the metaphysical aspects of subjects being standpoints and how these notions help us understand the subjective nature of conscious mental states. The paper also discusses the incompleteness of objective accounts of mental states and reframes Thomas Nagel's argument in terms of the proposed framework.

The Moodless Theory of Modality: An Introduction and Defence

Bradford Skow

Summary: This paper introduces a new reductive theory of modality, proposing that the moodless theory is closer to the tenseless theory of time than modal realism. It argues that the moodless theory is superior to modal realism, as arguments against the latter are weaker when applied to the former.

The Metaphysical Problem of Other Minds

Giovanni Merlo

Summary: This paper introduces a metaphysical perspective on the problem of other minds, emphasizing the indistinguishability between appearance and reality in consciousness. It suggests reevaluating the possibility of other minds being different from our own, while highlighting the importance of reimagining facts of consciousness as subjective rather than objective.

The World Just Is the Way It Is

David Builes

Summary: The relationship between objects and properties is viewed in two ways: primitive individuals instantiating properties and objects being bundles of properties. This paper aims to formulate a view that addresses the problems of both perspectives. Ultimately, the view proposed here leads to a radical version of Monism that eliminates the distinction between objects and properties.
