The Hispanic Outreach: Network Analysis of a Community-Based Policing Program in South Los Angeles

Gang Graffiti, Group Process, and Gang Violence

Summary: The study examines the relationship between gang graffiti and gang violence in a large city in the western US during a peak period of local gang feuds in 2014-15. Results show that an increase in neighborhood density of gang graffiti is associated with a roughly 40 to 60% increase in the expected rate of gang homicides, gang assaults, and gang firearm offenses. Unexpectedly, the relationship with gang homicide and assault was stronger for non-threatening gang graffiti compared to graffiti involving explicit threats or disrespect.

Investigating Clustering and Violence Interruption in Gang-Related Violent Crime Data Using Spatial-Temporal Point Processes With Covariates

Summary: This study models reported gang-related violent crimes in Los Angeles from 2014 to 2017 using spatial-temporal marked Hawkes point processes with covariates, proposing an algorithm to estimate background rate nonparametrically. The results suggest that the GRYD IR Program violence interruption can significantly reduce retaliation rates within certain distances from the original reported crimes.

East Side Story: Disaggregating Gang Homicides in East Los Angeles
