Summary: Heavy metal contamination, especially cadmium (Cd), is a major concern for global food production and safety. The strategies currently available to combat this issue are not widely used due to their inefficiency and time-consuming nature. However, nanotechnology-based ameliorative strategies, such as the use of calcium oxide nanoparticles (CaO NPs), have emerged as a potential alternative. In this study, the effects of CaO NPs on alleviating Cd stress in barley plants were investigated. The results showed that CaO NPs significantly increased plant biomass and antioxidant enzyme activities, while reducing Cd accumulation.

Titanium Oxide and Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles in Combination with Cadmium Tolerant Bacillus pumilus Ameliorates the Cadmium Toxicity in Maize

Summary: This study tested the efficiency of Cd-tolerant plant growth-promoting bacteria, zinc oxide nanoparticles, and titanium dioxide nanoparticles in promoting maize growth in Cd-rich conditions. Bacillus pumilus, the best Cd-tolerant strain, showed plant growth stimulation in both in vivo and in vitro experiments. The combination of B. pumilus, ZnO NPs, and TiO2 NPs had a synergistic effect in promoting plant growth in Cd-contaminated soil. The combined treatments reduced Cd toxicity, improved stress metabolism and defense responses, and decreased lipid peroxidation and Cd bioaccumulation in shoots and roots.
