A method for defining the CORE of a psychosocial intervention to guide adaptation in practice: Reciprocal imitation teaching as a case example

Sarah R. Edmunds et al.

Summary: Defining the essential components of an intervention is crucial for balancing fidelity and flexibility. This article presents a novel method, the CORE Fidelity Method, for defining key components of evidence-based interventions and applies it to a case example of a parent-implemented social communication intervention.

Caregiver Language Input Supports Sentence Diversity in Young Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder

Elysha Clark-Whitney et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the change in sentence diversity of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) over 6 months of treatment with Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Intervention (NDBI), as well as explore potential predictors of this change. The results showed that changes in caregiver NDBI strategy use and caregiver baseline Toy Talk were significant predictors of changes in sentence diversity.

Disparities in Early Intervention Program Participation by Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder in a US Metropolitan Area, 2006 to 2016

Josephine Shenouda et al.

Summary: Early interventions for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have been shown to be valuable, but the extent to which children with ASD participate in the Early Intervention Program (EIP) is unknown. This study evaluated EIP use by children with ASD from 2006 to 2016 and identified factors associated with EIP participation.

Beyond a coefficient: an interactive process for achieving inter-rater consistency in qualitative coding

Vonna L. Hemmler et al.

Summary: This article introduces a methodology to ensure inter-rater consistency in coding qualitative data. The methodology preserves the contextual and subjective nature of the data, allowing for the creation of a layered codebook and consistent application to varied types of data. This method helps researchers draw logical and substantiated conclusions.

A case study of a theory-based method for identifying and reporting core functions and forms of evidence-based interventions

M. Alexis Kirk et al.

Summary: Adaptation of existing evidence-based interventions (EBIs) often involves identifying core functions and forms to ensure efficacy is not compromised. This study presents theory-based methods for identifying core functions and forms post hoc, rooted in the Planned Adaptation Model (PAM), with six steps developed to guide the process. Extended PAM steps included identifying usual care pathways and mapping EBI core functions onto existing theories, offering researchers and practitioners a systematic approach to identify core functions and forms.

Parent utilization of ImPACT intervention strategies is a mediator of proximal then distal social communication outcomes in younger siblings of children with ASD

Paul J. Yoder et al.

Summary: This randomized control trial found that parents' participation in ImPACT training indirectly alleviated social communication challenges in younger siblings of children with autism spectrum disorders by increasing parents' use of ImPACT strategies and improving children's proximal skills. This study supports the clinical value of ImPACT in managing the risk of language delay and ASD in younger siblings of children with ASD.
