Electrical Hybridizations in Cities of the South: From Heterogeneity to New Conceptualizations of Energy Transition

Summary: This issue explores the hybridization of urban electricity configurations in cities of the Global South, which is shaped by the interplay of the patchy and limited extension of the conventional grid and the widespread socio-technical heterogeneity. The case studies presented in the issue demonstrate the diverse urban settlements and stages in grid development, highlighting the transformations and involvement of private actors. The question of how to govern these hybridized energy configurations to promote energy justice and enable clean energy transitions remains unanswered.

Summary: The ongoing protests in Lebanon on 17 October 2019 represent a critical moment in the struggle against political corruption involving people from different sectarian and religious backgrounds. Researchers have taken interest in the protests in Tripoli, a conservative Sunni-majority city in Northern Lebanon, as they took the form of a 'rave party' in the main public square. Through the lens of Agamben's Profanations, the article investigates how protestors in Tripoli attempt to profane the sectarian apparatus while preserving religious integrity.
