Chinese Investment in Turkey: The Belt and Road Initiative, Rising Expectations and Ground Realities

Summary: This article uses a novel dataset of Chinese investments in Turkey to provide insights into the volume, types, and sectors of Chinese investment in Turkey. The findings indicate that while Chinese investment in Turkey has increased, it remains modest compared to Western investments. The majority of Chinese investment in Turkey is focused on low value-added manufacturing, extraction of raw materials, and marketing of Chinese products. Overall, the developmental potential of Chinese investment in Turkey is not significantly different from investments from other countries.
