The Effects of Polarized Evaluations on Political Participation: Does Hating the Other Side Motivate Voters?

Summary: This study investigates whether increased polarization in Americans' partisanship has positive effects on political participation. Utilizing cross-sectional and panel survey data, the authors find evidence that polarized judgments are associated with pre-election voting intentions and post-election self-reported voter turnout. Polarization in candidate evaluations consistently has a greater impact than affective polarization. However, the expressed polarization in evaluations of both parties and candidates does not necessarily translate into political action. Roughly a quarter to a third of the actual change in voter turnout can be credited to polarization in evaluations of Republican and Democratic presidential candidates.
