Optimal Resistance Management for Mixtures of High-Risk Fungicides: Robustness to the Initial Frequency of Resistance and Pathogen Sexual Reproduction

Nick P. Taylor et al.

Summary: Multiple fungicides can be effectively used in mixtures to limit the selection for fungicide-resistant pathogens. However, consideration must be given to the initial differences in resistance levels and equalizing the frequencies of single resistant strains in the year when control becomes impossible can be a more optimal approach.

Host mixtures for plant disease control: Benefits from pathogen selection and immune priming

Pauline Clin et al.

Summary: Multiline and cultivar mixtures are effective methods for controlling plant diseases in agroecology. This study developed an epidemiological model to explore the impact of host mixtures on disease prevalence caused by polymorphic pathogen populations. The findings suggest that a large amount of resistance genes or the priming mechanism are needed to achieve low disease prevalence.

How large and diverse are field populations of fungal plant pathogens? The case of Zymoseptoria tritici

Bruce A. McDonald et al.

Summary: Pathogen populations differ in genetic diversity, with populations carrying higher diversity having greater evolutionary potential. The septoria tritici blotch pathogen Zymoseptoria tritici was studied, and it was found that wheat fields experiencing typical levels of infection can carry millions of pathogen genotypes and produce trillions of spores per hectare. Most observed adaptive mutations in Z. tritici populations can emerge from existing genetic variation within each field.

The Characterization of Pathotypes in Grapevine Downy Mildew Provides Insights into the Breakdown of Rpv3, Rpv10, and Rpv12 Factors in Grapevines

Manon Paineau et al.

Summary: This research describes a standardized method for characterizing the virulence profile of the grapevine downy mildew pathogen Plasmopara viticola. By inoculating 33 European strains onto six grapevine varieties with different resistance factors, the researchers were able to assess sporulation levels and the intensity of the grapevine hypersensitive response. They identified multiple pathotypes and detected breakdown of resistance in certain strains. This method enables early detection of resistance breakdown and monitoring of pathogen evolution.

Taking Advantage of Pathogen Diversity and Immune Priming to Minimize Disease Prevalence in Host Mixtures: A Model

Pauline Clin et al.

Summary: Mixing plant varieties is a promising method for agroecological plant disease control, with plant immunity being key to its success. Immune priming reduces the coexistence region of two pathogen genotypes in mixtures and generates a mixture of resistant and susceptible hosts. The epidemiological advantage of host mixtures over resistant pure stands is a direct result of immune priming.

Dilution effects in disease ecology

Felicia Keesing et al.

Summary: The dilution effect is a common phenomenon in reducing pathogen transmission in both managed and natural disease systems. However, challenges remain in studying the frequency and conditions of occurrence, as well as the relationship between dilution effects and pathogen spillover. Further research is needed to clarify these aspects and address the inconsistencies in the existing literature.
