Branched-chain α-keto acids and glutamate/glutamine: Biomarkers of insulin resistance in childhood obesity

Pinar Gumus Balikcioglu et al.

Summary: Insulin resistance in obese adolescents is associated with sex-dependent metabolic features, which can be improved by lifestyle intervention. Glutamate/glutamine and branched-chain alpha-keto acids may serve as biomarkers for assessing metabolic status.

Longitudinal characterization of determinants associated with obesogenic growth patterns in early childhood

Navin Michael et al.

Summary: This study examined the determinants of obesogenic growth trajectories in childhood and their associations with cardiometabolic risk markers. The results showed that BMI acceleration starting immediately after birth or after infancy were both linked to early cardiometabolic alterations.

Associations of Obesity With Growth and Puberty in Children: A Cross-Sectional Study in Fuzhou, China

Ying Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the associations of obesity with growth and puberty in children. The findings showed that children with obesity were taller in early childhood, had earlier onset of puberty, and experienced earlier cessation of growth. However, there was a sex dimorphism on the effect of obesity on the incidence of precocious puberty.

Ethanolamine: A Potential Promoiety with Additional Effects on the Brain

Asfree Gwanyanya et al.

Summary: Ethanolamine is a bioactive molecule found in cells, including the central nervous system, and it has the ability to promote drug movement across the blood-brain barrier. It has positive functions in cell signaling and molecular storage, and changes in its levels have been associated with neurodegenerative diseases. This mini-review focuses on the effects of ethanolamine on the CNS and discusses its implications for drug design.

Untargeted Metabolomics Analysis of the Serum Metabolic Signature of Childhood Obesity

Lukasz Szczerbinski et al.

Summary: Obesity rates among children are increasing rapidly worldwide, leading to pressure on healthcare systems. This study utilized untargeted metabolomics to investigate the metabolic signatures of childhood obesity and found clear differences between obese and normal-weight children. Alterations in lipid metabolism were found to be correlated with the pathogenesis and metabolic consequences of obesity in the serum metabolome. The identified metabolites could potentially be used as biomarkers and contribute to the study of obesity pathomechanisms.

Role of branched-chain amino acid metabolism in the pathogenesis of obesity and type 2 diabetes-related metabolic disturbances BCAA metabolism in type 2 diabetes

Froukje Vanweert et al.

Summary: The catabolism of branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) is believed to play an important role in the pathogenesis of metabolic disturbances in obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, there is limited understanding of tissue-specific BCAA catabolism in humans. Studies suggest that enhancing BCAA catabolism may improve glucose homeostasis in metabolic disorders like obesity and T2D, making it a potential future treatment strategy for insulin resistance and T2D.

Obesity in China 3 Health policy and public health implications of obesity in China

Youfa Wang et al.

Summary: China has experienced significant social, economic, and lifestyle changes since the 1990s, leading to a rise in obesity rates. Despite efforts to tackle obesity, the country still faces challenges in controlling the epidemic and the associated burden on the healthcare system. The Healthy China 2030 national strategy provides an opportunity for China to establish comprehensive national strategies for addressing obesity, but strong commitment and leadership from central and local governments, as well as active participation from all sectors of society, are needed.
