Revisiting the impact of per-unit duties on agricultural export prices

Dela-Dem Fiankor et al.

Summary: We replicate the findings of Emlinger and Guimbardr (ERAE, 2021) on the heterogeneous effects of per-unit tariffs on trade patterns for developed and developing countries. Analyzing import and export data from 2001 to 2013, they confirm the Alchian-Allen conjecture that per-unit trade costs induce higher export unit values. However, the effects are more pronounced for developed country exporters. Understanding the effects of per-unit trade costs vis-a-vis ad valorem tariffs is important to level the playing field of trade negotiations that involve pricing and non-pricing policies.

Distance to destination and export price variation within agri-food firms

Dela-Dem Doe Fiankor

Summary: This paper assesses the impact of bilateral distance on within-firm-product variation in FOB export prices across destinations. The findings suggest that an increase in distance leads to a higher export price, which can be attributed to both differences in product quality and variable markups. Furthermore, it is observed that exporting firms charge higher markups in distant markets, although this form of price discrimination is less pronounced for higher-quality products.

Estimating market power for the Chinese fluid milk market with imported products

Yuquan Chen et al.

Summary: The fluid milk market in China is imperfectly competitive, with strong market power held by the top three domestic brands but no evidence of market power for imported milk. This might be due to high price elasticity of demand, inefficient sales channels, and entry barriers for imported milk. The government needs to create a more competitive market and overseas suppliers should improve their competitiveness.

Non-Tariff Measures and the Quality of Imported Products

Mahdi Ghodsi et al.

Summary: Legitimate reasons for non-tariff measures (NTMs) exist in regulations, enabling countries to restrict the import of low-quality products for the protection of domestic consumers' health and the environment. This paper analyzes the impact of technical barriers to trade (TBTs) and sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures on the quality of traded products, finding that these measures do indeed improve the quality of traded products.

Markups, quality, and trade costs

Natalie Chen et al.

Summary: This paper examines the impact of geographic distance or bilateral tariffs on the markups of quality-differentiated exports. The study finds that exporters practice price discrimination by adjusting markups in different markets. However, the response of markups to changes in trade costs is heterogeneous and weaker for higher quality exports.

Tariff liberalization and firm-level markups in Indian manufacturing

Subhadip Mukherjee et al.

Summary: This study confirms the two-sided effect of tariff liberalization on Indian manufacturing firms, with a stronger impact on the input channel and larger firms benefiting more from reduced input tariffs. The relaxation of size limits in 2006 also resulted in higher markups for importing MSMEs. Firm size, liberalization channel, and policy framework are all important factors influencing firm-level markups.

Average income, income inequality and export unit values *

Helene Latzer et al.

Summary: This paper examines the relationship between income distribution and export unit values, finding a positive correlation between a country's average income and export unit values, but a heterogeneous relationship with income inequality, particularly in poor countries. The results are robust to controls for other factors and alternative measures, and demand-side mechanisms may partly explain this relationship.

INPUT TRADE LIBERALIZATION AND MARKUP DISTRIBUTION: EVIDENCE FROM CHINA

Zhengwen Liu et al.

Summary: The study finds that the impact of tariff reduction on firm markup is heterogeneous, leading to an unevenly distributed markup change across firms. Specifically, reduction in output tariff decreases markup and markup dispersion, while reduction in input tariff increases markup and markup dispersion.
